Description
GEORGE SCHARF, OF CROWN IOINT, INDIANA.
FASTENING- DEVICE FOR DOORS, 6to.
Application filed February 25, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SCHARF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Crown Point, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Doors, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention is concerned with fastening devices and is designed more especially to produce an auxiliary device for application to the casing of doors and windows and applicable thereto to prevent their rattling and to hold them closed so firmly as to prevent drafts and cold air entering between the door and casing if the door should be warped or ill fitting, or between a window and the casing, if the'window is loose.
To this end it consists essentially of a cushion orlocking member connected by a link with a spring member adapted to be secured on the door or window frame, so that when the lock is to be used, the link can be easily swung to carry the locking member from its inoperative position away from the door or window sash into its operative position in engagement therewith and to hold the same pressing against it by spring action, so as to prevent the door or window from possible movement and to hold it firmly closed and prevent its rattling.
To illustrate my invention I annex hereto .a sheet of drawings in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which- Figure l is a front elevation showing my invention as applied to a door;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cushion or locking member.
In the drawings, a represents the body of the door frame and b the strip against which the edge of the door c is held when the door is closed. d is the facing strip, which in different doors is at different heights from the adjacent face of the door, when the latter is closed. The foregoing is the ordinary door construction to which my invention is adapted to be applied.
In carrying out my invention in its preferred form, the spring member e preferably takes the form of a plate of spring metal having two or more apertures therein through which the screws f are passed to Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 218,956.
secure the plate on the facing strip al. It is adjusted with its end projecting over the edge of the facing strip d, and said end is preferably formed with a pair of ears g which are conveniently turned up from the body of the metal, and sprung into these ears are the inwardly turned ends L of the U-shaped link member j, which is preferably formed of a strong wire. The cushion or locking member k is preferably formed of a block of rubber having an aperture Z extending through the length thereof and of the proper size to receive the bottom portion of the U-shaped link member j. The block la is preferably polygonal in crosssection and as a preferred form, I show it provided with four sides, m, n, o and p, and each of the four sides is at a different distance from the axis of the aperture Z, so that by turning the block so as to bring the necessary one of the four sides adjacent the door the effective length of the block and t-he link can be regulated to adapt it for doors in which the surface of the facing strip Z is at different distances from the face of the door c.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent: I/Vhen it is not in use, the link is swung back to the dotted line position where it is out of the way and the door is free to open. When it is to be used, after the door is closed, the link is swung around to bring the block 7c with the proper surface in engagement with the door, in which position it is held by the spring action of the plate e.
While I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purpose, it will be understood it is capable of modifications and I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims, except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.
I/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a frame having an abutment, of a spring member secured thereto and acting toward the abutment, a link member pivoted to the spring member and having its free end swinging toward and away from the abutment, a cushion member mounted on the free end of the link member, and a movable member adapted to be orced against the abutment by the cushion member when the link member is turned in the proper position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination With a frame having an abutment, of a leaf spring member secured on the outer face of the vframe and having ears turned up therefrom extending over the `side opposite the abutment2 -a- U- shaped link member pivoted to the ears, a
cushion member pivoted on the 4bottom ofv the U-shaped link member, and a movable member adapted to be forced against. the abutment by the cushion member When the link member is turned in the proper posi- Copies of. this patent may he obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents5 i tion, 'substantially as and for the purpose described 3. In fastening devices for doors, ete., the combination with a spring member adapted to be secured to a frame, of a link member pivoted thereto, and a cushion member mounted on the other end of the link member, said cushion member having a plurality of sides at different distances from its pivotal axis2 for the `purpose described.
In Witness whereof, have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of February, A. D. 1918.
GEORGE SCHARF. [L 5a.]
