Description

F. FRANK. SASH HOLDER.
(No Model.)
Patented Sept, 9
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND FRANK, OF SUISUN, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,966, dated September 9, 1890. Application filed May 13, 1890- Serial No. 351,645- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND FRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Suisun, Solano county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in \Vindow-Locks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Myinvention relates to what I term a window-lock.
It consists of a device whereby both the vertically-moving sashes of a window may be simultaneously locked with reference to each other at any desired point.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view showing my device applied to a window-sash to lock it when closed. Fig. 2 is a view showing it in position to lock the sashes when partly open and to prevent rattling.
A is an eccentric or irregularly-shaped cam turning upon a pin B and having fixed and secured around its periphery the rubber or frictional band C. The pin B passes through a horizontal slot D, which is made in the upper end of a standard E, and the pin has a head or collar upon the end opposite to the cam, so as to prevent its being drawn through the slot, but which will allow it to move from end to end of the slot.
G is a screw passing through the side of the standard and into one end of the slot, and this screw may be turned so as to force the pin or shaft 011 which the cam is fixed toward the end of the slot as much as may be desired. The standard is firmly secured upon the top of the lower sash and in line with the vertical sides of the sashes, so that when the cam A is turned to present the larger portion of its eccentricity toward the upper sash it will bind against the latter, and will thus prevent the lower sash from being raised or the upper sash from being pulled down.
This serves as a perfect lock for both sashes when they are entirely closed; but when the sashes are partially open and it is desirable to fix them so as to prevent their being moved from this position the cam is turned about so as to present the fiat side a toward the sash. The screw is then turned into the standard so as to force the pin or shaft on which the cam is mounted, toward the opposite end of the slot in the standard until the cam has been forced firmly against the sash and the two sashes are locked with relation to each other and prevented from being moved. This arrangement also serves to prevent the rattling of the sashes when they are loose, and the cam is easily adjusted upon the standard by means of the screw and the slot, as before described, so as to fit it to any shrinkage or change in the relative position of the sashes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
A fastening device or look for windows, consisting of the standard fixed to the top of the lower sash in line with the vertical sides of the sashes, a horizontal slot made in the upper part of the standard, a pin or shaft passing through said slot and movable therein, a screw by which the movement of said pin is limited or regulated within the slot, and a cam fixed to the projecting end of said pin and having the surrounding frictional band and the flattened surface a, whereby the cam may be forced against the sash by means of the screw and the sashes locked with relation to each other, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FERDINAND FRANK. Witnesses:
WILLIAM WOLF, M. A. MAYNARD.
