To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JiicKsoN STERLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Win dow-Blind Operators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for holding and locking blinds, windows and transoms or other similar devices, and has for an object to provide a device of the class embody* ing improved features of convenience, econ omy and reliability.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a device of the class an implement which cannot become unhoolred or disengaged in any manner and which is adapted to hold the blind or the like at any approved or desired angle.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a device of the class, means for locking the blind or the like at the desired angle and to reduce to a minimum rattling` and disagreeable noises.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a view of the device in side elevation attached to a conventional window-ledge and blind. Fig. 2, is a view of the device in top plan attached the same as Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a detail view of the auxiliary means for locking the blind in closed position.
While the device is here illustrated and will be described as associated with a blind. and window frame, it is to be understood. that such association is only representative of one of the uses to which the device may be put and that the use and operation of such device is not limited to a blind, but is designed to be operated in association with any hinged object which it is desired to hold and lock at an adjusted angular position.
As illustrated, the window-ledge is shown at 10, with the side piece frame 11, shown in section in Fig. 2, and the lower corner of blind 12 shown at Figs. 1 and 2 open relative to the window frame. Upon the windowledge and adjacent the middle thereof, a
member comprising a base 13, and a pivot bolt 1.11, are rigidly secured to the ledge as by means of the screws or other fastenings shown at 15. Upon the pivot bolt 14, a sleeve 16 is journaled, carrying a rod or arm 17 rigid. with such sleeve and extending radially from the pivot bolt 14 as a center.
To the blind 12, is secured a member 1S having an arm 19 extending outwardly therefrom and with a rod 20 inserted through an opening of such arm and bent upon itself into substantially U-shape. Upon the spaced ends of the U-shaped rod 2O a hub 21. is rigidly secured in any approved manner as by means of casting upon the ends of such rod such hub being provided with an opening through which the rod 17 moves slidably and provided with a thumb screw 22 adapted to bear upon the rod 17 and to secure such rod rigidly in any adjusted. position relative to the hub 21.
It will be seen that the rods 17 and 20 are disposed in alinement and are held in such alined position by means of the hub 21, but that the hub moves slidably upon the rod 17 as the blind 12 is moved upon its hinges.
In Fig. 2, the angular positions of the parts when associated with a window frame and blind are shown whereby the blind 12 is held in open position. It will be readily understood that by loosening the thumb screw 22 the blind 12 may be moved angularly to move the hub 21 upon the rod 17 nearer to the pivot bolt 141 until the blind is closed.. `When the blind is closed, it may be secured in such closed position by tightening the thumb screw 22, but an. auxiliary means is provided by producing an abutment 23 upon the base 13 and a gravity actuated catch 24 arranged upon the blind 12 in the usual and ordinary manner here shown as by the means of the keeper 25.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, an arm projecting from a blind, a U-shaped extended rod forming an arm and hinged. to said arm on the blind, a joint member connected to the outer end of said U-shaped arm and having a passageway, a rod extending movably through said passageway and pivotally connected at one end to a iixed support, and means for adjustably clamping said rod in said joint member and locking the parts in adjusted position.
