Description

W. J. REDDIGK.
HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED 11011.15, 1910.
9 94, 1 96, Patented June 6, 1911.
rmrr as r" 1 HINGE.
Application filed November 15, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. REDDICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeland, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges and the leading object thereof is the provision of a hinge comprising a swinging leaf member and a stationary leaf member which is inclosed by a socket member, in which it may be adjusted by means of a screw bolt.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door amb, showing my improved hinge applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view as seen on line 22, Fig. 1, showing the door in an open position, and, Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the hinge as seen on line 33, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the door j amb, which may be constructed in any preferred manner, and 2 indicates a door, which is adapted to be hinged to and swung from the j amb. In or-- der to keep the door in perfect alinement with the j amb or casing to which it is swung, I provide my improved form of hinge, which comprises a pair of leaves 3 and 4:, the leaf 3 being constructed in the usual manner and secured to the edge of the door by means of screws 5, one edge of the swinging leaf 3 having knuckles 6 through which projects a pin 7. One end of stationary leaf 4: is provided with a knuckle 8 which is disposed between the knuckles 6 of the leaf 3 and is hingedly connected thereto by a pint-1e 7 passing through the knuckles of both leaves. The leaf t is provided along its edges and its inner end with flanges 9 and 10, respectively, which forms the leaf & substantially trough shaped in cross section.
The leaf 4B is entered into a socket 11,

which is in turn attached to the jamb 1 by means of screws 12 or otherwise, the inner walls of the socket 11 having ribs 13 thereon, which enter grooves 14L in the outer faces of the flange 9 said ribs and grooves retaining the leaf 4 in perfect alinement with the socket. Extending through a threaded opening 15 in the closed end 16 of the socket is a threaded adjusting bolt 17, the outer end thereof being provided with a head 18, whereby a wrench may be readily applied thereto to rotate the bolt. The inner end of the bolt 17 is extended through an opening 19 in the end flange 10 of the leaf 1, said bolt being provided with collars 20 on opposite sides of the flange 10, so that while the bolt is swiveled to the leaf 4: and may readily rotate in the opening 19 the leaf 4 will be moved longitudinally coincident to the movement of the bolt.
By this construction it will be readily seen that the door can be readily adjusted and kept in perfect alinement with the door frame without requiring the door to be trimmed in order to obtain a perfect fit, and, it will further be seen that the hinge can be produced at a nominal cost and can be readily applied to use.
What I claim is:
In a hinge, a member having a longitudinal socket portion, the side walls of said portion being provided with ribs and the side edge portions of said member being bent outwardly from said side walls and adapted for attachment to a support, said member having a closed end and an open end, a hinge leaf having its side edge portions disposed angularly to engage the side Walls of the member and having grooves to receive the ribs of said side walls, one end of said leaf being disposed angularly and the other end being provided with a knuckle, a hinge leaf having knuckles pivotally connected to the knuckle, and a screw threaded through the closed end of the member and swiveled to the angular end of the hinge leaf received thereby.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM JACOB REDDIOK.
