  • An object of this invention is to provide a butt hinge for doors which can be adjusted to compensate for shrinkage and swelling of doors and prevent them from binding at the jamb or in the casing in which they are hung, and cause them to tit proporly. It has been customary when a door has swollen or shrunk so that it binds or is too loose in its casing, or is set too close to the j amb, or if the butts are not accurately located, to plane o a part of the door or the casing or to reset the hinges for the purpose of overcoming the above objections. This mode of construction has been unsatisfactory and expensive and there has been no certainty that the door would then hang properly. By the use of my improvementl these objections are overcome, without removing ⁇ the door from its hinges or marring the paint or wooden surfaces.

HINGE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN I-I. Donor-IUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to provide a butt hinge for doors which can be adjusted to compensate for shrinkage and swelling of doors and prevent them from binding at the jamb or in the casing in which they are hung, and cause them to tit proporly. It has been customary when a door has swollen or shrunk so that it binds or is too loose in its casing, or is set too close to the j amb, or if the butts are not accurately located, to plane o a part of the door or the casing or to reset the hinges for the purpose of overcoming the above objections. This mode of construction has been unsatisfactory and expensive and there has been no certainty that the door would then hang properly. By the use of my improvementl these objections are overcome, without removing` the door from its hinges or marring the paint or wooden surfaces.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan looking down upon the upper edge of my improved hinge; Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views showing different positions in which the members of the hinge may be adjusted; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pintle; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another form of my invention; Fig. 7 is a detail in section taken upon the line A-A of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of another form of my invention, and Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the pintle employed in the construction illustrated in Fig. 8.
In the drawing, A and B indicate the two leaves of a hinge of ordinary forrn,` provided with the usual screw openings 2, through which screws may be passed for securing the leaves of the hinge to the door and the jamb or part of the casing against ywhich the face of the door abuts when closed. The leaves A and B are formed with the usual knuckles 3 and 4, through which the pintle member C is adapted to be passed, and upon which the leaves of the hinge swing. This pintle has two portions 5 and 6, the respective axes of which are arranged eccentric or offset for the purpose of Specification of Letters Patent.

providing adjustment between the leaves of the hinge to vary the space between the face of the door and the face of the jamb in the frame containing the door, and also to vary the position of the door as regards the stop on the jamb and compensate for shrinkage and expansion of the parts. The knuckles 3 and 4 have their vertical openings 7 and 8 out of axial alinement, so that by turning the pintle and securing it to one of the knuckles in selected position such as by the set screw 9, the leaves of the hinge are made to swing on an axis according to the position in which the pintle is set. The portion 5 of the pintle is larger in diameter than the portion 6 and the openings 7 and 8 correspond in diameter to freely admit the parts of the pintle without loss in motion. The pintle isv formed with a circular body 10, which is illustrated in Fig. 1, and is interposed between the knuckles 3 and 4 when the leaves are connected by the pintle. This body is provided with a series of radial openings 11 in its periphery into any one of which a pin or instrument may be inserted for the purpose of turning the pintle when adjusting it into horizontally selected position to adjust the relative position of the leaves.
The upper end 5 of the pintle is connected to an end piece 12 of usual form the mode of connecting being by shrinking or otherwise fastening the end 12 in the end of the pintle. The lower knuckle 3 is provided with an end piece 13, corresponding to the upper end piece, said lower end piece being` shrunk or otherwise fastened in the lower end of the knuckle. This construction permits the leaf B to be disconnected from the leaf A by loosening the screw 9 and releasing the pintle. For the purpose of lightening the construction and saving material the upper portion 5 of the pintle may be cut away at 14.
The leaves and pintle may be variously modified within the scope of my invention without departing from the principle which I have applied, for instance, in the construction appearing in Figs. 6 and 7 which illustrates one modication. In these figures the leaf B is formed with one knuckle 21 and the other leaf A with a pair of knuckles 16 and 17, between which the knuckle on leaf B is positioned longitudinally. The three knuckles form a longitudinal passage of even bore. In the bore of knuckles 16 and 17 are secured two cores 15 having coaxial longitudinal passages placed eccentric to the axis of the passage in which the cores are held. The pint-le is formed with two end members 18 and 19 which journal in said cores and with an intermediate body'EZO. The knuckle 21 receives the body portion 20 of the pintle while the cores 15 receive and hold the pintle end members 18 and 19, said cores being inserted in the knuckles 16 and 17. rIhe end members 18 and 19 of the pintle being of less diameter than the diameter of member 20, the axis of the end members 18 and 19 being eccentric to the axis of the body 20 of the pintle and one of the end members such as 19 being fastened in horizontally selected position by means of the set screw 22 in the same manner as in the preferred construction, the leaves 0f the hinge are caused to turn upon the pintle as an axis, the eccentricity being according to the selected position in which the pintle is secured to the knuckle 1G. The pintle as in the preferred form is formed with an enlarged circular projection 23, provided with openings 2% in its periphery and adapted to be interposed between the knuckles 17 and 18 thereby providing means which may be engaged by a pin or other instrument for turning the pintle and adjusting its axis upon which the leaves are caused to turn, when the screw 22 is loosened. The screw 22 it will be noted is threaded through the upper core 19 and impinges against the upper member of the pintle to hold the pintle in said position. By removing the screw 22, the pintle is adapted to be lifted out from engagement with the knuckles to separate the leaves ofthe hinge. The outer ends of the knuckles 16 and 17 are provided with caps 25 and 2G which are threaded or otherwise engaged to hold them in place after the pintle has been inserted in the knuckles.
Another form of my invention is illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 in which the member 27.
by which the pintle is turned into selected position is formed on the upper end of the pintle above the sockets of the hinge.
It is obvious that the principles involved in this invention may be applied to various forms and designs of hinges without depart ing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as conining myself to the specific construction set forth within the scope of the following claims.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of ope 1ation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment theieof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A hinge having a pair of leaf members formed with knuckles and a pintle formed with a pair of vertical members fitting into said knuckles and with a laterally extending body adapted to be interposed between said knuckles, having engagements in its surface for turning said pintle, the axes of said vertical members of said pintle being eceentrically arranged to each other and means for holding said pintle to one of said knuckles in horizontally selected position.
2. A hinge, comprising, in combination, a pair of leaves formed with knuckles, a pintle having members fitted in said knuckles permitting said leaves to swing, the axis of one member of said pint-le being eccentrically arranged to the axis of the other whereby the turning of said pintle varies the axis on which said leaves are adapted to turn, and means for holding one of said members of said pintle in turned position in one of said knuckles, said pintle being formed with integral engaging means for turning it into selected position said engaging means being placed between said knuckles and laterally accessible.
