ADJUSTABLE HINGE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed March 29, 1915. Serial No. 17,773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY PEARSON and J OHN RENFREW, respectively, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, and a British subject, and resident of Habana, Cuba, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable hinges and is especially applicable to hinges for swinging doors of rail way cars and those used in buildings.
A hinge of the class to which this invention pertains is one having features of adjustability whereby the jamb plate or leaf and the door plate or leaf are adjustable in a manner to insure that when the door is closed it will have its desired proximity to the j amb and will be properly free relatively thereto for the avoidance of any binding, in other words the hinge by reason of its adjustable character is adapted to overcome the effects of shrinkage or swelling of the door.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, is defined in the claims and the advantages. thereof are rendered apparent herein.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view showing the jamb, a portion of the door which is hinged to the jamb, and the new adjustable hinge connecting said parts. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation as taken on line H, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the jamb of a doorway to which the door in hinged, B representing an adjacent portion of the door.
0 represents the j amb plate or leaf of the hinge and D represents the door plate or other leaf of the hinge.
The amb plate is to be set into a comparatively deep mortise a in the jamb and it has as an outward extension of the lower edge portion thereof a bracket 1), the location of which is outwardly beyond the face of the amb.
The jamb plate has its inner edge portion (2 angularly turned and provided with an axially vertical hinge barrel (or barrels) the barrel member 7 jamb plate and its inwardly located hinge member having occupancy entirely within the aforementioned mortise a.
Hinged to the inner angularly turned and barrel-provided portion d of the j amb plate 1s a link plate E having an axially vertical at its outer edge portion which is also extended beyond the face of the jamb and terminates opposite the aforementioned jamb plate bracket Z); and the said link plate barrel has an upwardly standing post or pintle g on which the tubular barrel member 0 of the door plate has its hinge connection.
vMeans are provided for adjusting, and securing in its adjustment, the link plate E with which the hinge connection of the door plate is made; and in the example here shown the same comprises a bar G supported by and adjustable relatively to the jamb plate bracket B and having a connection with the hinge united link plate and door plate. This bar has a vertical hole h in one end portion whereby it fits about the pintle g and its so perforated and engaging end portion of the bar is interposed between the hinge barrel 0 of the door plate and the barrel 7 of the link plate. Said bar G, moreover, has a longitudinal slot i thereln; and the upper face thereof is made with transverse serrations j.
is represents a confining or clamping block also having serrations m in its under side to match with those 7' of the adjacent bar Gr. Said block is made with a vertical screw hole therethrough; and 0 represents the screw for detachably confining the clamp block for immovably binding the adjusting bar on the jamb plate bracket b,the shank of the screw passing through the clamp block, through the slot in the bar and with a screw thread engagement into the axially vertical tapped hole therefor in the bracket.
In case it is desired to adjust the door with its hinged edge closely to the jamb, to allow for expansion or swelling, the screw 0 is turned upwardly sufliciently to permit the clamping blocks to have their serrations disengaged from the serrations of the slotted adjusting bar Gr, whereupon the latter is slid in a manner to swing the connected link plate and door plate in the proper direction to carry the hinged edge of the door more closely to the jamb, thereby giving proper freedom between the free edge of the door hinge,
and the jamb relatively to which itcloses,- the clamp plate, of course, after the adjustment, being again engaged or bound on the serrated bar; and, of course, in case of shrinkage or contraction of the door, the bar G will be adjusted in an opposite direction.
In the arrangement of the parts of this the hinge barrel cl oithe jainb plate is comprised in approximately the lower half of the inner edge portion of the plate. he hinge barrel member f of the link plate is comprised in approximately the upper half of the inner edge portion of such plate; the Outer hinge barrel of the link plate is comprised in approximately the lower half of its outer edge portion, while the hinge barrel '0 of the door plate is comprised in approximately the upper half of the outer edge portion of such door plate.
The hinge is one on which the door swings or may be swung on double fulcrums,at all times on the aXis of the hinge connection between the door plate and the link plate, and, in the course of the adjustment, on the axis of the hinge connection between the link plate and the j amb plate.
By the halving of the hinge members together as shown, the j amb plate supports the link plate and the link plate supports the door plate and the weight carried thereby. The adjusting bar G also forms a supplemental. or secondary support for the weight imposed on the door plate directly from the jamb plate.
We claim 1. In an adjustable hinge in combination, a jamb-plate having a bracket member at an outer portion thereof and having a linkplate hinged to an inner portion thereof, a
door-plate hinged to the outer portion of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for having its inner edge hinged to link plate, and a bar adjustably confined on said jamb-plate-bracket, and engaged with the hinge-connected link-plate and doorplate.
2. In an adjustable hinge in combination, a jamb-plate having a bracket member at an outer portion thereof and having a linkplate hinged to an inner portion thereof, a door-plate hinged to the outer portion of the link plate, a bar having a slot therein, and a serrated face, resting on and adjustable relatively to said jamb-plate bracket, and engaged with the hinge-plate and door-plate, a perforated block having serrations to engage with the serrations of the bar, and a headed screw having the shank thereof passed through the block, and slotted bar and with a thread engagement into the jamb plate bracket.
3. In combination, a jamb-plate having at its outer edge a bracket member, a link plate the jamb plate and having a barrel member at its outer edge, a door plate having a barrel member axially coincident with the link plate barrel member, and a. pintle for hinge connecting said barrel members, a bar supported by and adjustable relatively to the jamb plate bracket and engaged with said pintle and means for adjustably confining said bar in any given adjusted position on the jamb plate bracket.
