ROSS HAZELRIGG AND WILLIAM J. MEEKER, OF SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed. July 22, 1913. Serial No. 780,562.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Ross HAZELRIGG and WILLIAM J. MEEnEn, citizens of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
ticularly to those used on oflice and residence between-room doors, the main object of the invention being toproduce a device in combination with a hinge whereby a door may be pulled back into place when it has sagged, or is warped so that it strikes against the frame, or has become slightly out of line for any reason, without the necessity of removing the hinges and changing their location, planing the door down, or any similar methods now used when. a door is out of plumb.
Another object is to provide an inexpensive means for this purpose, yet one which will be exceedingly efficient.
These objects we accomplish by means of the particular construction and adaptation of parts, as fully set forth herein, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the improved hinge, showing the same wide open. Fig. 2 is a modified form of our improved hinge, showing the same as adapted to be used in the butt form of construction and usage of such hinges, as applied to a door, in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental section of a por tion of Fig. 5, showing an operating means.
In the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The most useful location for our improved hinge will be in place of the usual upper hinge, while the lower one may be of the usual type, though in places it will. be found desirable to have both hinges of our improved type.
The hinge is formed of two members 18 and 19, having sleeves 20 and 21 respectively thereon, for the reception of a pin 22 for the purpose of connecting the two portions 18 and 19. and forming the usual pivotal point on which the door swings.
Adapted to seat in the hollow portion 30 of the member 28 against a shoulder 31 in the same is the head 32 of the screw 33. which screw is one of those holding the hinge member secure with the frame 2. It will of course be obvious that the said frame is recessed or mortised out sufficiently to allow the side 26 of the member 24 to be flush with the edge of the said frame2. It will then be seen that in the operation of this hinge, when the screw member 28 is turned, bv means of a screw-driver the member 18 will be pulled into the clearance space in the triangular member 24, as the screw member itself cannot move either in or out by reason of its being held both by its abutting against the member 24. and by the screwhead 32 acting againstthe shoulder 31 of the member 28. With this appliance also, it is desirable to first loosen the screw 33 in order to permit of freer movement of the member 28, and then tighten the said screw 33 so that the jar and vibration of the door when in use will not cause the screw 28 to gradually work loose and allow the member 18 to change its position. Thus it will be seen that by the turning of this screw 28 the door 1 may be promptly and accurately adjusted to any practical. degree of nicety. Thus from the description it'will be clear that we have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of this invention.
While we have shown and described the present and preferred embodiments of our device. still in practice *such deviations may be made from such detail as do not from the spirit of the invention.
depart What we claim as new and useful, and de sire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An adjustable hinge for doors comprising two pivotally connected leaves one of said leaves being bent at right angles along its vertical length adjacent the pivotal connection, a triangular shaped envelop secured to the door frame, said hinge leaf extending into said envelop, and pivotally seated inthe apex thereof, a tubular screw extending through theouter Wall of said triangular-envelop and seated on the inner Wall thereof, a screw threaded opening in said leaf adapted to be engaged by said tubular screw, a countersunk opening in said screw, and a holding screw seated in said countersunk opening for the purpose of locking said tubular screw.
2'. An adjustable butt hinge for doors, comprising two leaves pivotally connected one with the other, one ofsaid leaves being turned at right angles along its vertical. length a short distance from said pivotal connection, said leaf being enveloped to the said angle in a triangular-section shaped casing secured to the frame of the door, said leaf projecting at the angle thereof through a slot in said casing, the end of said leaf farthest from said pivotal connection being seated in the apex of the triangular casing, and screw means seated in said casing, and adapted to cooperate with and move said leaf within the triangular space in said casing, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
