Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Application filed April 22, 1915. Serial No. 23,232.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. BRYON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in A justing Devices for Door Checks and Closers, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention has a special reference to the class of door closers and checks, wherein the same are located in a floor, door sill, door lintel or any part of the door casing for the purpose of actuating the door for closing the same, and for checking the closing movement of the door, and the invention has for its primary object to secure perfect alinement or centering of the hinge-butts or pintles of a hinge mounted door, with the post or spindle of the door closer and check. Heretofore, means have been provided for effecting a connection between the door and the closer and check, as applied to doors which are supported by hinges as distinguished from those mounted on pivots at the top and bottom edges of the door and resting on the mechanism constituting a closing and checking device, but no suitable means have been provided to effectually and accurately aline the hinge-butts or pintles of the hinges and the post of the device, in such a manner as to prevent undue twisting and wearing of the parts and consequent imperfect action of the door during its opening and closing movements, nor to adjust the parts so that the piiitles of the hinges will be in accurate alinement vertically with the post or spindle of the device.
To accomplish these ends, one of the objects of my invention is to provide an adjustable connection between the door closing and checking device and the door, said connection being carried by the door and so constructed as to be movable toward and away from the same adjacent to its inner or pivoted edge eitherat the lower or upper edge of the door or at such other point as the adjustable connection is effected.
Another object is to provide a construction so that the door and door closing and checking means may be accurately coupled without requiring'any re-adjustment either of the hinges that may be already applied to the door or of the casing of the door check or closer.
With the above and other objects in view, the lnvention consists in the particular novel combinations and arrangements of parts,
as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification;
Figure 1. is a fragmentary horizontal cross-sectional view of the associated parts of a door frame and door hinged thereto, with one form of adjusting means applied to the door in accordance with the invention,
a fragmentary portion of the floor being shown in plan.
Fig. 2. is a fragmentary vertical sectional vlew, partly in elevation of the parts and adjustment means illustrated in Fig. 1, the sectlon being taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. i Fig. 3. is a view similar to'Fig. 1 but showmg a modified form of the adjusting means embodying my invention.
Fig. 1. is a detailed perspective view of an adjustment arm employed in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5. is a horizontal sectional view of a further modified form of the invention looking downwardly from the bottom edge of the door.
In the accompanying drawings in which,
like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views 1 is a door frame having the usual rabbet or recess to form a seat for a hinged door 3, which operates in the frame. The hinges which support the door in the frame, are indicated by 4 and are of the usual or any preferred construction having the ordinary hinge-butts or pintles by which the hinge-plates or leaves are pivotally connected, two or more of such hinges being gen- ;erally employed and mounted along the hinged edge of the door.
5 designates the flooring in which is mounted a door check and'closer 6 which may be of any improved or well known type but more particularly as described in my Patent No. 750,802 dated February 2nd, 1904, or as improved upon subsequently thereto. This door check and closer is provided with a post or spindle 7 connected to the actuating mechanism of the device, said post projecting upwardly through the top of a casing 8 which supports the device in a recess in the floor.
It is to the accomplishment of this end that the present invention is designed and in the form thereof illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings as one of several modifications to which I do not desire to strictly bind myself, the door at the lower portion of its inner vertical edge is recessed to receive a transversely apertured block 9, the inner wall of the aperture therein being provided with notches or serrations 10, whlle the opposite wall is left smooth. The aperture extends transversely through the door and at one side is enlarged as shown at 11. In order to prevent weakening of the door due to the aperture therein, reinforc ing plates 12 are secured to the opposite faces of the door preferably in a manner to close the aperture at the side of the door opposite to the side adjacent to position of the projecting post 7 of the door closing and checking device.
The block is held in position at the inner edge of the door by the screws 13 or by any suitable means. As will be observed from Fig. 2 of the drawings, the aperture is in the lower portion of the block and is designed to receive the arm of an element of an adjustable connection 14- which at one edge is notched or serrated to fit into the correspondingly notched or serrated wall or face of the block aperture. To effect this, means are provided to force the arm against the inner wall of the aperture so as to bring the notched faces thereof into positive locking engagement; and for this purpose there are provided apair of setcrews 15 threaded through the block at its inner side to exert a pressure against the stem of the arm.
The outer end of the connection 14 is preferably enlarged and so constructed as to closely fit in to the recess in the door at the side thereof toward which the post or spindle of the door check and closer is located. The outer end of the connection projects from the door in the latter direction and is provided with a bottom or downwardly opening socket 16 to receive the projecting end of the post to connect the door to the actuating mechanism as shown. The axes of the hinge-butts or pintles are located in a plane coincident with the vertical plane at the coacting edges of the frame and door when the latter is closed, as will be observed from Fig- 2 of the drawings. It is essential that the axes of the hinge-butts and pintles and the axis of the post he in accurate vertical alinemcnt in order to obviate twisting and wearing of the parts inconsistent with the working thereof, in order that the same will not i p the present invention the arm of the-connection 14 may be adjusted at right angles to the door by loosening the screws 15, moving the arm 14 to the desired position either in or out with get out of working order. By
respect to the door and then" tightening the screws 15, so that the'centers of the post 7 and the hinged pintles may be alined and the door be permitted to swing without torsioning or twisting the hinges, post or associated parts of the mechanism of the door check and closer, so that the latter may properly serve its functions.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3 and l of the drawings, the parts are constructed in the same manner with the exception that inlieu of the apertured block 9, a block or barrel 17 is fitted in a recess in the door, the inner end of the barrel being spaced from the side remote from the post so as to provide a space to accommodate a head or retaining member 18 mounted on the adjacent and non-threaded end of aperture in the end wall of the barrel which is bored out to receive the circular stem or shank 20 of a connection 21 which is provided with a similar enlarged end and socket 16 as heretofore described. The HJflnk 20 has a threaded bore 22, by which it is adjustably connected to the stud so that it may be adjusted toward and away from the door to aline the parts in a manner setforth hereinbefore. An opening in one of the plates 12 through which the connection projects, permits the movement of the arm or connection 21 in the manner specified.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, a further modification is shown in which an arm or plate 23 is adjustably secured to the bottom edge of the door or seated in the latter, the arm proper having the form of a lateral projection 245 with a socket 25 for engagement by the post. The plate is provided with a longitudinal slot 26 and a diagonal slot 27 near the lateral projection thereof, through which pass adjusting members 28 and 29 to hold the plate in an adjusted position, it being apparent that as the plate is shifted longitudinally inward the armlwill be projected to a greater degree and vice versa.
To assemble the construction embodying my invention to a door (which of course is already swung on its hinges) the procedure is as follows The connection 14 is adjusted in position so that the center of the socket 16 is in alinement with the axes of the pintles of the door hinges. When the connection is so adjusted it is secured in place by tightening the screws 15. The door check is then placed in position in the floor, the post 7 of the check be ing inserted in the socket 16 of the connection 14-. It is therefore obvious that as the center. of the socket 16 is first brought in alinement with the axes.of the pintles of the door hinges, that the center of the post 7 of the check will be is inserted in the socket 16 of the connection 14.
a threaded stud 19. This stud is secured through an in this alinement when it From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and eliicient form of adjusting means to bring about alinement of the axes of the butts and post, and that all inaccuracies in this regard can be readily overcome should said parts incident to use, get out of alinement. By the use of the term door check and closer, any. spring or other actuated door actuating or closing mechanism is meant and is synonymous in the combination.
lit may be further pointed out that the adjustable connections or socket members 14, 21 and 24 may be reversed in position or extended at either side of the door, for use in connection with either right or left hand doors.
