Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door securers, and more particularly to that class which are adapted to be secured to the door casings, and which have their operating parts eXte rior to the door proper.
The object of my invention is to provide a securer of this type which may be readily and permanently secured to the door casing an which is provided with a swinging member adapted to be secured in its closed or operative position to prevent the opening of the door, and also to be secured in an open or inoperative position when not in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a securer of such strength that when in operation the door cannot be opened without destroying or breaking the door or casing,
and in which all of the parts of the securer are secured together in one single device.
For a full, clear and complete disclosure of one of the forms of myinvention reference may be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.

My device consists generally of a stationary attaching member A a horizontally swinging door-retaining member B hinged thereto and having mounted thereon a vertically swinging catch C. The attaching member A consists of a flat dove-tail tongue a apertured at Z) to permit the passage therethrough of a securing screw D. The contracted end of the dove-tail portion a terminates in a body portion 0 which is apertured at d to permit the passage therethrough of a pin or pintle. The top and bottom of the body portion 0 is flat to present horizontal bearing surfaces for the swmgmg member B. The
outer side of the body portion 0 is rectangularly notched or recessed at c and the inner side is shouldered or recessed at f and also shouldered at g, the said shoulder being preferably cut at an obtuse angle to the shank a in order to present a surface tangent to the curved bead of the door casing E.
The horizontally swin ing door-retaining member B consists of a flat plate 'i which is thickened and notched longitudinally at one end to form a pair of bearing members 7c, k which latter contain apertures Z, Z for the passage of a pin or pintle therethrough. Pivoted in the front of the retaining member B and adjacent to the notch in the end thereof is a catch plate C which consists of the handle portion m and the oppositely hinged cam edges a, n. The cam plate 0 is apertured between the cam edges for the passage of a pivot pin 0.
The alined apertures Z, Z of the bearing portions Zc, 7c of the retaining member B are arranged in vertical alinement with the aperture (Z in the body portion 0 of the attaching member A and throu h these alined apertures is passed a pintile p which is secured rigidly in the outer apertures Z, Z but is free to oscillate or turn in the inner aperture p, thus the bearing members 7c, 7c and the body portion 0 taken together with the pintle p form a hinge. The inner end of the notched portion of the retaining member B is kerfed outwardly at q so that when the retaining member is in its closed orlockedposition the rear or inner edge 1" of the surface {1 abuts against the attaching member A in the rear of the notch 6, thereby determining the throw of the retaining member B when the latter is in its closed or locked position. The pintle apertures Z,Z and d are so located in their respective members and the outer end of the attaching member is of such a curvature that the rear edge 1 of the notched portion of the retaining member B will clear the attaching member A when the retaining member is swung from its closed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to its open position as indicated by the dotted lines in these same figures. The pivot catch plate C is of such a contour that the one or the other of the cam edges n, a will pass into the notch e and may be wedged into close contact with the inner end of this notch when the catch plate is turned substantially through a quarter of a circle as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 3. The
handle m of the catch plate C may be swung either upwardly or downwardly to effect a locking engagement with the notch e in the attaching member A since the cam surfaces n, n are uniformly disposed with relation to the pivot pin 0. When the retaining member B is turned to its open position, as shown in the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 the angle of the faces of the notch f is suchas to permit a slight swinging movement of the retaining member B, the locking engagement of the catch plate with the notch being effected by the surfaces of the notch coming within the path described by the cam edge when in its locking position, and. not by a wedging action. Thus the catch plate will, by virtue of I its own gravity, fall into locking engagement with the notch f as soon as the inner end S i of the catch plate clears the outer curved sur face 0 of the projecting end of the attaching 1 member A. The wedging action of the catch plate C when locking the retaining member in its closed position obviates any danger of this member becoming unlocked by the shaking of the door against the retaining member, or by an accidental displacement of the catch plate. The free or loose engagement between the catch plate and the notch f to secure the retaining member in its open position enables the locking to be effected automatically without necessitating the operator to make a positive movement of the catch plate as is essential when effecting the wedging engagement of the same to lock the retaining member in its closed position. The dove-tail portion a of the attaching member A is mortised into the door casing so that its outer surface will be flush with the casing.
The attaching member is secured to the casing by means of a screw sufficiently strong to withstand any force which would break the same without damaging the casing. When the door is closed it is impossible for this screw to be ripped out of its socket, thus the securer is as durable as the door and casing. The outer force upon the securer is further resisted by the dove-tail portion of the casing, and any turning movement of the attaching member A is prevented by the close abutment of the shoulder 9 against the corner or bead of the casing E. The extremity of the door comes in contact with the swinging member B only at a position adjacent to 1 its pivot since the extremity of the door swings through an arc which would bring its outermost edge into contact with the rear of I the retaining member thus preventing any force being exerted by the door, except at this edge. By this arrangement of the parts no leverage of any extent is exerted upon the retaining member by virtue of its length since the point of resistance to the door is in the same location regardless of the length of 1 the member. tire securer is in one assembled device, thus the inconvenience of mislaying, or losing one or more of the parts is avoidec The device is adapted for any character of door and its attachment is effected by means of a single screw, and while the mortising of the attaching member into the door casing is a very desirable means of securing the same yet, the flat attaching member A may be made thin enough to be secured directly to the surface of the casing without any mortising. hen it is fastened in this manner several standard sizes of attaching members may be utilized so that the base end of the plate A will abut against the shoulder of the casing which taken together with the shoulder f abutting against the outer corner of the casing will resist any tendencyof the attaching member to turn upon its securing screw.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A door-securer comprising an attaching member terminating at its outer extremity in a projecting body portion, a door retaining member mounted to swing horizontally on said body portion and a vertically swinging member carried by said door-retaining member and arranged to engage said body-portion to lock said retaining member in its closed position.
2. A door securer comprising a flat vertical dove-tail portion terminating in an out wardly projecting body portion having a curved outer end, a forked member mounted on said body portion to swing around said curved end, and means for locking said swinging member in its closed position.
3. A door securer comprising a stationary member having one side thereof notched and its opposite side shouldered, a horizontally swinging member and a vertically swinging means mounted on said horizontally swinging member and arranged to engage said notch to secure said horizontally swinging member in its closed position and to engage said shoulder to secure said horizontally swinging member in its open position.
4. A door securer comprising a stationary member having one side thereof notched and its opposite side shouldered, a horizontally swinging member and means arranged to engage said notch to secure said horizontally swinging member in its closed position and to engage said shoulder to secure said horizontally swinging member in its open position.
