SPRING-ACTUATED GATE-CLOSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 11115..
Application filed June 10, 1914. Serial No. 844,322.
useful Improvements in Spring-Actuated Gate-Closers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gate closers and has for one of its objects to provide an improved article of this character which is adapted for application to the hinge postof a gate of ordinary construction and designed to operate automatically when the gate is opened, to return the same to its closed position.
With the above and other objects of similar nature in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate with the invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the gate in an open position, Fig. 3 is a front view of the closer and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, in constructing the closer there is provided a casting or bracket which is adapted for application to the hinge post A of a gate B of ordinary type, said bracket comprising the plate 11, whereby the device is supported from the post, and the platform 12 which extends outwardly and at substantially right angles to the plate and is adapted to support for swinging movement the angular arms 13.
In detail, the plate 11, a portion of which projects upwardly from the platform 12 to provide a suitable stop for limiting the outward movement of the arms 13, has formed therein the openings 14; through which screws 15 are adapted to be passed to secure the bracket in applied position. Arranged in the platform 12 adjacent the plate 11 are a pair of spaced openings 16, pins 17, which are carried upon the inner ends of the angular arms 13, being inserted through said openings and forming the pivotal mounting for said arms. To retain the pins 17 within the openings there are provided the trans verse apertures 18 through which cotter pins 19 or other suitable means may be conven iently passed. The angular arms 13 are further provided at their outer or free ends with the downwardly extending gate engaging posts 20 between which the gate is adapted to be held when the same is in its normal or closed position. To retain the arms 13 in their operative position with respect to the gate there is provided at the angle thereof the upstanding apertured lugs 21 between which is arranged a helical spring 22, inward movement of the arm under the influence of said spring being limited by the wedge shaped stop 23 which is formed on the upper face of the platform 12. It will thus be apparent that when opening the gate in either direction, one of the arms 13 will be swung outwardly on its pivot and against the tension of the spring 22, said spring, when the gate is released, returning the arm to its normal position and closing the gate. It will further be noted that should it be desired to open the gate for any length of time, either of the arms 13 may be rendered inoperative by swinging same outwardly and against the stop portion of the plate 11, the spring 22 when the arm is in this position being swung beyond the pivot point thereof and retaining same in such position until it is again desired to close the gate.
What is claimed is:
A gate closer comprising a bracket adapted for attachment to a gate post and provided with a stop on its upper face, oppositely sprung angular arms each pivoted at one end to the upper face of the bracket at opposite sides of the stop and having depending free end portions spaced apart to receive therebetween a gate, and a helical spring connecting the remote points of the angular arms and arranged to hold both arms yieldably against the stop.
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
