To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM S. AUL'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at VabaSh, in the county of lVabash and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to those adapted for use in connection with door frames to which are adapted to be connected or attached the well known form of fly screen, and the object of my invention is to providesimple and novel means whereby the hinge proper can be conveniently and readily attached to or removed from the frame of the screen.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which when connected with the frame of a screen will effectively serve to brace the frame and to hold it against sagging.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a door frame and a portion of a screen frame showing the said portions in position to be connected to each other by my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking key. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of 'my invention. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 5. Feferring now more particularly to the drawings, and with particular reference to Fig. 1, there is shown a portion of a door frame B and a portion of a screen frame or door A.
My improved hinge is illustrated at 1 and comprises leaves 2 and 3, the latter having formed integral therewith horizont-ally disposed spaced knuckles 4 and the former a pair of similar knuckles 5 adapted to aline with the knuckles 4. The said knuckles are provided with alining passages adapted to i receive a pintle or retaining pin (3, Fig. l
n n q n 7 around which is coiled a spring 7 disposed between the knuckles 4 upon the leaf 3. The springs 7 have one of their terminal ends 8 yieldingly engaged with the leaf 2, while the other terminal ends 9 of the springs are yieldingly engaged with the leaf 3. The leaf 3 is provided upon its upper and lower edges with flanges 10 and 11 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The leaf 3 is provided with an elongated slot 12 which communicates at its inner end with a circular recess 13 formed in said leaf.
The door frame B is provided with a plate or similar element 14 which is formed with guideways 15 and 16 disposed in spaced relation to each other and arranged to receive the flanges 10 and 11 of the leaf 3. The said plate 14 is provided with a plurality of apertured knuckles 17 that receive screws or fastening devices 18 engaged with the frame B as clearly illustrated. The plate 14 has extending therefrom and revolubly mounted thereto a locking key 19 provided with an elongated or elliptical cani portion 20, and at the outer end the said key is provided with a winged or linger engaging portion 21 so that the key can be conveniently revolved iii order that the cani portion 20 can be moved into a position to permit it to pass between the walls of the slot 12. In assembling the parts herein described, the frame A is raised so as to bring the leaf 3 in exact alineiiient with the plate 14, after which the flanges 10 and 11 are inserted in the guideways 15 and 16. Assuming the key 19 to be in a position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be seen that the portion 20 is free to pass between the walls of the slot 12, and when the said portion assumes a point in line with the recess 13, the said key 19 can be revolved manually in order that the ends 22 of the portion 20 will be frictionally engaged with the walls of the recess 13 and will lie crosswise or transversely of the slot 12, thus effectively preventing the displacement of the leaf 3 and plate 14. The device herein described is extremely simple in construction and may be applied to doors or similar closures or screens of the ordinarytype and to the well known forms of door frames.
The construction of the leaf 3 is such that when its flanges 10 and 11 are disposed in the guideways and 16 the frame A will be effectively braced horizontally and held against sagging at t-he bottom to provide a perfect swinging movement of the said frame A as will be readily understood. The device is further such that its use is desirable in connection with screen doors for the reason of the fact that the door may be moved at will by silnply manipulating or actuating the key 19 to disengage the ends 22 of the portion 20 from the walls of the recess 13 in order that the portion 20 can be moved in direct alinement with the slot 12 to permit sliding movement of the leaf 3 as will be appreciated.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Figs. 4 to 6 it will be seen that I employ a pair ofy leaves23 and 24. The leaf 23 is provided at its upper and lower ends with outwardly extending knuckles 25 which are each provided with a socket 26. The leaf 24 is provided with a pair of knuckles 27 each having a trunnion 28, and as shown these trunnions are mounted in the sockets 26 formed in the knuckles 25. The knuckles 27 upon the leaf 24 are provided with sockets 29 which receive the ends of a pintle or pin 30. A washer 31 is secured to the pin or pintle and is located midway between the ends thereof. Upper and lower springs 32 and 33 are coiled about the pintle or pin, the inner ends of the said springs being extended outwardly and are yieldingly engaged with,
. the leaf 23 while the outer ends of the said springs are extended outwardly and are yieldingly engaged with portions of the leaf 24. The leaf 24 is provided with notched portions 34 adapted to receive one of the edge port-ions of the leaf 23 so that the latter serves as a stop to limit the swinging movement of the leaf 24. These springs are such that the leaves 23 and 24 are normally held approximately in a plane with each other but it will be understood that the leaf 24 is free for swinging movement. The leaf 23 above described is equivale-nt to the leaf 2 in the preferred form of my invention and is secured to the frame A. The door B shownin Fig. 4 of the modified form of my invention has secured thereto a plate 35 upon which is formed a pair of guideways 36 adapted to receive the flanges 37 of the leaf 24. The leaf 24 is provided with an elongated passage 38 which communicates at one end with a circular recess or cavity 39 and is identical with that described in the preferred form and is adapted to receive a locking key 40 revolubly mounted upon the plate 35. The construction of the device just described is such that the various elements forming the same are arranged in a compact manner as will be understood and when in their operative positions the said elements will be effectively held against casual displacement.
I claim 1. A hinge comprising a pair of pivoted leaves, one of the said leaves having an elongated slot therein which extends to one of the side edges of the leaf, the said leaf having a substantially circular recess therein which is arranged in direct communication with the slot, a bracket, guides on the bracket for receiving the said slotted leaf of the hinge, and a revolubly mounted locking element located between the guides and adapted for insertion through the said elongated slot and adapted for movement into locking engagement with the walls of the saidcircular recess to hold the bracket operatively associated wit-h the said slotted leaf.
2. A hinge comprising pivotally comiected leaves, one of the leaves having a slot therein which extends to one side edge of the leaf, a bracket for detachable engagement with the said slotted leaf of the hinge, and a locking element movably mounted on the bracket for locking engagement in the said slot.
3. A hinge comprising pivotally mounted leaves, one of which having a slot therein which opens at one end onto one side edge ofthe leaf, a. bracket for detachable engagement with the slotted leaf, and a rotatably mounted locking member on the bracket for locking engagement in the slot.
