BENJAMIN F. LAUDENSCHLAGER AND JOHN S. FREDERICK, 0F EMAUS, PENNSYL- VANIA.
HINGE.
Application filed August 3, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. LAU- DENSCHLAGER and JOHN S. F REDEIIIOK, both citizens of the United States, both residing in Emaus, county of Lehigh, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges of the class employed for hanging doors, blinds, screens, etc., and the particular object of the invention is to provide a hinge of this kind which is so constructed that it may be so applied to a stationary support or frame and to the movable part which it supports that space may be economized and the hinge members may be readily connected and disconnected when desired.
Our improvements are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a hinge embodying our invention applied to a window frame and a screen mounted in said frame. Fig. 2 shows a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge. Fig. 4e is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail view in section, showing a portion of a window frame, a portion of a screen frame and the two hinge members attached thereto.
The hinge consists of two members. The member A comprises a leaf (5 formed with screw holes a and a knuckle a carrying a pintle a The member B comprises a leaf 6, formed with screw holes 6 and a socketed knuckle 6 adapted to receive the pintle a It will be observed that the knuckle a? is arranged wholly on the inner sideof the leaf (r and the knuckle b is arranged wholly on the inner side of the leaf 6. This is clear by an inspection of Fig. 3 which shows the screw holes a, b beveled on the outer sides of the leaves to receive the heads of the screws. In this way when the members are coupled the axis about which the hinge swings is, when the hinge is closed or in the position shown in Fig. 2, inside the vertical plane of the movable member and also inside the plane of the stationary member, and furthermore when the hinge is open, as shown in Figs. 4: and 5, the axis of the hinge is located in a plane intermediate the planes of the leaves. By this arrangement when Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916. Serial No. 112,992.
the hinge is applied the knuckles may be set into a recess, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, in such manner as to not project from the frame and occupy space which may be used for other purposes.
The drawings show the hinge applied to a window frame and a screen. The vertical frame piece C of the window carries, as usual, a strip C which is formed with a recess 0 of such size in cross section and in height as to receive the knuckles, and the recess extends above the knuckles to a sufficient extent to allow the knuckle to be inserted and withdrawn. The leaves of the hinge are also preferably countersunk in the frames, as indicated, and thus all space may be economized. In this way the hinge is made to occupy no space which is not occupied by the frames and in this way also the space X, Fig. 2, in front of the screen I) is left clear for the blinds or other parts of the window frame closure.
The drawings, Fig. 2, show a portion of the screen frame at D, the screen wire 61 being attached to the frame by a strip d in the usual way. The particular form of screen is not, however, important as our invention resides in the hinge which is of such construction as to connect the movable frame with the stationary frame in such manner that the knuckles will not occupy any space in the window which may be used for other purposes.
We claim as our invention:
A hinge, comprising two leaves formed with knuckles extending from the inner sides of the leaves and joined by a pintle located in a plane between the leaves, a frame piece to which one of the leaves is secured and is formed with a recess into which both knuckles extend and a frame piece attached to the other leaf of the hinge, said recess extending above the knuckles sufficiently to permit one knuckle to be lifted from the other and removed from the recess.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names.
BENJAMIN F. LAUDENSCHLAGER. JOHN S. FREDERICK. Witnesses:
