l.Specification of Letters latcnt.
Application led September 22, 1913. Serial No. 791,187.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUDOLPH CHARLES, BRANDLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 1539 McAllister street, in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hinges, and relates more particularly to hinges used in connection with the doors of display cases, the object of the invention being to provide a new, novel and improved type of hinge which is of economical construction and which has interchangeable leaves that connect the doors to the pilaster in such manner that the latter does not occupy space available for display purposes.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front ele-` vation of the'hinge, the two leaves being shown in open position; Fig. 2 is a horii zontal section, the leaves being shown' in closed position and connected to they rails of a pair of glass doors and to a pilaster, each of the latter parts being shown in fragment; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.
2, showing the leaves in open position;.fFig.
4 is a front elevation of the base member of the hinge, the leaves being omitted Fig. 5 is a side elevation of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a modified form of the invention; Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a further modified form of the invention; and Fig. 9 is a top plan view of the form of hinge used with but one door.
rl`he present invention involves a base member formed of a single sheet of metal having a body plate 1, which latter is provided with a pair of end ears 2 which eX- tend on one side face of plate 1, and a central ear 3 which extends on the opposite side face of the plate 1, the several years being perforated to receive screws 4 to fasten the member to a pilaster P. The outer side of plate l isformed with a pair of end knuckles and a central knuckle each designated 5, the spaces between ythe knuckles receiving the superimposed knuckles 6 of the two hinge leaves 7.
. lt is particularly to be 7noted that the y hinge leaves 7 are duplicates of each other and interchangeable and eachhas an upper Copies of this patent may be obtained for and a lower spaced knuckle, thus enabling each leaf to have ample bearing on the pintle 8 and at spaced points on saidy pintle'which Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
plate 1. By having the platel of solid imperforate character, greater strength is accordingly had.
lThe doors may be of glass as shown in Fig. 8 in which event the leaves are providedv with right angular extensions 9 to which'the glass is secured. In somecasesL the ears E?. may be formed.A with extensions 1() as shown in Fig. 7, and secured to o p-` posite side faces of the pilaster l?.
In Fig. 9 the hinge is shown in connection with but one door in which case but one leaf 7 is employed and the ear or ears on one of the side faces ef plate 1 are omitted. 4It
will furthermore be seen that the leaves 7' in each instance are of ythe same length as that of the plate 1 which thus enables the doors yto be effectively connected to the leaves.
Wfhat islclaimed is: n A hinge composed of a solid plate of single thickness having. a central ear which eX-y tends on one side face thereof and a pair of end ears which eXtend'on the opposite side face of the plate, the front edge of the late having lined spaced end knuckles and a knuckle arranged centrally inthe space between the end knuckles in registery therewith, anda pair of interchangeable yleaves each having a pair `of similar-spacedy knuckles of equalaggregate length arranged intermediate the ends thereof, the respective knuckles ofthe leaves being superimposed and supported from each other and from the central and the lower end knuckles of the plate, the knuckles and located in spaced relation to the front edge of said plate. o
