WILLIAM J. SMITH, or WATERZBURY, oonnnorrour, ASSIGNOR T0 WATERBURY oLOoK 00., on WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
BUTT-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SMITH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butt- I-Iinges; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, andwhich said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a broken view in elevation showing my improved hinge as in use.
Fig. 2 a view thereof in transverse sec tion, showing how the offsetting knuckle of the hinge effects the clearance of the molding-strip on the door from the door-jamb when the door is opened.
Fig. 3 a broken view in inside elevation of the door and door-jamb, showing the door in its closed position.
Fig 1 a broken edge view of the door and door-jamb, showing the door in its open po sition.
Fig. 5 a detached perspective view of the hinge in its open position.
My invention relates to an improved hinge designed for use in situations where, for the sake of appearance, it is desirable to practically conceal the hinge, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacture, a simple, light and effective hinge of this character.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a hinge having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I form the lower edge of the leaf 2 of the hinge with a flange 3 turned inwardly at a right angle to its plane, and having its inner end extended to form a knuckle 4. In the same manner, I form the upper end of the leaf 5 of the hinge with a flange 6 turned outwardly at a right angle to its plane and having its inner end extended to form a knuckle 7, overlapping the knuckle 4 and secured thereto by a pintle 8. By bending the flanges 3 and 6 in opposite directions, as described, the leaves 2 and 5 are made rights and lefts. The said leaves 2 and 5 have countersunk screw holes 9 for the reception of the screws 10 by means of which they are respectively secured to the edge of the doorjamb 11 and to the edge of the door 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Fig. 1, the door is provided upon its inner edge with a bead or molding-strip 13 secured in place by brads 14L and overhanging the joint 15 between the door and the jamb. This bead is formed with a transverse slot 16 into which the oflsetting knuckles 4 and 7 enter. These knuckles are offset to such an extent from the leaves 2 and 5, that the bead 13 clears the jamb 11 as the door is opened.
By forming the adjacent ends of the respective leaves of the hinge with flanges turned therefrom in opposite directions and offset toward each other to form Overlapping knuckles joined by a pintle, I secure a hinge which, when applied, is invisible except for the very narrow width of the knuckles which projectoutward from the door and jamb to which the hinge is applied. Now these knuckles maybe almost entirely concealed from the ordinary observer, if a bead or molding-strip such as 13, is applied to the door, and formed with a slot 16 for the reception of the knuckles. My improved hinge as thus constructed is extremely simple and as effioient as any ordinary hinge. It is particularly adapted for use in hanging the doors of clock cases or other light cabinets. Of course the bead is not essential to the use of the hinge, being merely ornamental in its office and not functional except in so far as it prevents the knuckles from being hit or bent.
I claim I A butt-hinge for doors, comprising complementary right and left hand axially parallel leaves perforated for the reception of fastening-screws and having their adjacent ends bent transversely in opposite directions to form flanges which are extended toward each other beyond the adjacent edges of the said leaves and terminate in overlapping knuckles whlch are un ted by a pintle,
. whereby when the hinge is closed, the said specification in the presence of two subscribflenges are registered and their knuckles 111g Witnesses. concealed 1n a transverse slot in a bead or molding-strip applied to the door in posi- WILLIAM SMITH 5 tion to cover the joint or crack between Witnesses:
the door and doonframe. J. R. PUTNAM,
