SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,300, dated December 15, 1896.
Application filed May 11, 1896. Serial No. 591,138. (No model To all whom, it may concern/ Be it known that I, EDWARD L. SCHACHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class ot doorholders which are designed to permit of a door being slightly opened for Ventilating and other purposes and yet prevent it from being opened sufficiently for the entry of a person, and which are so constructed and arranged that they cannot be disconnected from the door or casing when t-he door is opened, but may be disconnected therefrom when the door is closed, so as to permit of the said door be` ing entirely opened in the ordinary -manner when desired.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple door-holder adapted to operate with equal efficiency in holding either right 0r left hand doors, and one which may be applied to ordinary doors and door-casings without in any way marring the same, and which, when the door is disconnected from the casing and adapted to be entirely opened, will assume a position out of the way and will enhance rather than detract from the appearance of the door.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view illustrating portions of a door and door-casing with the door closed and my improved devicein its operative position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, illustrating the door in its slightly-opened position. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation illustrating the position which the links or arms of the improved device assume when they are disconnected from the fixture on the door. Fig. 4. is an enlarged perspective view ot' the door-tixturc removed, and Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section taken in a plane above the inner link or arm.

A indicates a door-casing, and B indicates the door, which may be of the ordinary construction and are simply illustrated to show the application of my improved device.
C indicates what I term the door-fixture of myimproved holder, becauseit is designed to be applied to the door. This door-fixture C comprises a body-plate a, having apertures b for the reception of attaching-screws c, the horizontal projection d, which is preferably formed integral with the plate a, and prefer ably extends therefrom in the manner shown, and the studs c c', which extend upwardly and downwardly, respectively, from the project-ion d, adjacent to the outer end thereof, and are provided at their outer ends with the heads f, which are preferably shaped as shown for a purpose presently described. The two studs are provided upon the fixture C in order that the same maybe applied to and used with equal facility and efficiency on right-hand or left-hand doors, the stud c being designed for use when the fixture is applied to a left-hand door and the stud e' being designed for use when the fixture is applied to a right-hand door.
D indicates the bracket-plate of my improvemen ts,whichis designed to be connected to the casing A, and, like the plate a of fixture C, is provided with apertures g for the reception of the attaching-screws li.. This bracket-plate D is also provided with a central aperture t', and in this aperture is jour naled .the trunnionj of the rotatable bracket E, which is secured to the bracket-plate by providing its trunnion y7' with an enlargement at itsinner end, as illustrated, orin any other approved and suitable manner.
F indicates the inner link or arm of the holder, and G indicates the outer link or arm thereof. The inner link or arm F is pivotally connected to the rotatable bracket E, and the outer link or arm G is pivotally connected to the outer end of the inner link or arm in any suitable manner. I prefer, however, for the sake of iinish, to rabbet the inner end of the link Fand connectsuch rabbeted portion to the bracket E by a rivet 7c, and I also prefer to rabbet the contiguous ends of the two links or arms and connect them in a IOO pivotal or hinged manner by a rivet l, as shown.
The outer link or arm G is provided at or adjacent to its outer end with an aperture II,
which is designed to receive the stud e of the door-fixture C, and is shaped in conformity to the head of said stud in order to permit of the link G being placed on and removed from the stud when the door is in its closed position.
Io In using my improved holder the link G is connected to the fixture C while the door is in a closed position, as shown in Fig. l, and
when the door is partly opened, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the link G, and
consequently the aperture Il therein, will assume such a position with respect to the head f of the stud e that the link G cannot be re- .,f-moved or disconnected from the said stud.
lVhen, however, the door is closed, the aperture II will register with the head f of stud e, and the arm G may then be readily raised out of engagement with said stud, the rotatable bracket E permitting such movement of the said arm. Then such disconnection of the arm G from the stud e is effected, the arms F G will in virtue of the rotatable bracket 'E assume the pendent position against the casing illustrated in Fig. 3, where they will be out of the way, and the door 3o may then be opened and closed to the full extent in ordinary manner without interference.
Vhen the holderis in its operative position, as seen in Fig. 2, it will be observed that the 3 5 door will beheld in the sli glitly-open position, but cannot be opened to a greater extent, nor can the holder be disconnected from the doorfixture C,'the parts being so constructed, as before described, that such disconnection can 4o only be effected when the door is closed. Consequently it will'be seen that when a door and a door-easing are equipped with my improvements the door may be left ajar for ventilation or other purposes Without any danger of an intruder being able to gain entrance to Athe apartment. It will also be seen that my improved device will effectnally prevent a burglar from gaining entrance to an apart` ment even after the lock ofthe door has been picked or broken.
My improved device is also desirable, because it is adapted to hold a door slightly ajar and prevent the same from being swung to and fro, and when made of bronze metal and suitably embellished it is an ornament to a door and enhances rather than detracts from the beauty thereof.
If desirable, it is obvious that the fixture C maybe connected to a door-casing instead of to the door, and the bracket-plate D may be connected to the door instead of the doorcasing. I prefer, however, to arrange such parts. in the manner illustrated and before described. It is also obvious that when desired the fixture C may be provided with but a single stud, the two studs shown being designed to be used alternately in the manner described.
l-Iaving described my invention, what I claim is The door-holder described comprising the fixture adapted to be connected to a door and provided with the horizontal projection having the upwardly and downwardly projecting headed studs e, c', the bracketeplate adapted to be connected to a door-casing and having a journal-aperture, the rotatable bracket having the trunnion j ournaled in the aperture of the bracket-plate and secured to said plate, a link or arm connected in a hinged or pivotal manner to said rotatable bracket, and a second link or arm connected in a pivotal or hinged manner with the first-named link or arm and having an aperture shaped in conformity to the heads of the studs of the doorfixture, substantially as specified.
