DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,405, dated December 29, 1885.
Application filed November 3, 1885. Serial No. 181,788. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. GARD, of Meriden, in-the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Door-Securers;and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for securing the doors of wardrobes, washstands, and such like articles of furniture, and it is in the nature of a spring check-plate which will securely hold the door in a closed position, but will permit of its opening by a slight pull when desired.
My invention consists in acoinbined spring check-plate and handle made integral, of a single piece of spring sheet metal, stamped up in finished shape ready to apply to the door.
It further consists in a combined spring check-plate, handle, and escutcheon made in a similar manner; and it finally consists in an improved device, as above set forth, in combination with a corresponding or suitable device to engage therewith, attached to the door jamb or frame, all substantially as hereinafter fully and clearly described, and afterward specificially pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view, showing my improved combined spring check-plate and handle or door-pull attached in position on a door. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1, the door frame or jamb, with the other part of the device, corresponding to the keeper of a lock, attached to it. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective, similar to Fig. 1, showing my improved combined spring check-plate, handle or pull, and escutcheon applied in place on the door. Fig. 4is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 3, the door-jamb and keeper being shown as in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of the door with the same device applied as is shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a View of the ordinary pointed tack which is peculiarly adapted for use as a keeper for the style of spring check-plate shown in Figs.
1 and 2. Fig. 7 is a View of an ordinary round-head tack or nail specially adapted for use as a keeper for the spring check-plateshown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. E is a plate of spring sheet-metal, which is formed, by stamping or other suitable shaping, into my improved device. The portion of this device which is attached to the front of the door is bent to form two flat portions, F F, and a raised bent or curved portion, G. The flat portions lie full upon the face of the door and are perforated to receive screws f f, by which they are secured to the door. The curved portion G forms the handle or doorpull and has its edges rounded out at g to give a good grip and relieve the device of any objection on account of rough edges or a tendency to out or injure the hands in using it. That part H of the sheet E which joins the fiat portion F is turned over substantially at a right angle to the said fiat portion, and lies substantially in a line parallel to the edge of the door, and is constructed to form the spring check-plate in my improved combined devices. In Fig. 1 I have shown it having a transverse V-notch, h, adapted to receive a corresponding device attached to the doorjamb. This spring checkplate stands out slightly from the surface of the door, or the door may be slightly hollowed out, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to provide room' for the springing back of the spring check-plate when the door is being opened or closed, such retraction being caused by contact with the keeper.
I have shown two keepers adapted for use with aspring check-plate having a V-grooveviz., a double tack, I, (shown in Fig. 6,) and a bent plate, J. (Shown in Fig. 8.) The tack is simply driven into the door-jamb, while the plate J is attached by tacks or screws through perforations j.
In Fig. 4- I have shown the spring check- 5 plate provided with a semi-spherical depression, h, instead of the V-notch h. This is adapted to receive the head k of a round-head tack or nail, K, Fig. 7, or a semi-spherical projection, l, on a plate, L. (Shown in Fig. 9.)
The nail may be driven in the jamb. as in the case of the double-pointed tack, and the plate L is attached in a manner similar to the plate shown in Fig. 7. It is to be understood, however, that any suitable catch may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.

1. The improved combined spring checkplate and door pull or handle herein described, consisting of a single piece of spring sheet metal, stamped or shaped to form the pull and latch, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved combined spring checkplate, door-pull, and escutcheon herein described, stamped or shaped up of a single sheet of spring metal, having a latch device, a pull, a keyhole, and suitable means of attachment, as set forth.
3. In combination, acombined'spring checkplate and door-pull attachable to a door, and a keeper of a form to properly engage the spring check-plate attached to the door-jamb, 5
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The improved combined spring checkplate and door-pull herein described, having flat portions to lie upon and be secured to the front of the door, an outward-curved portion to form the handle, and a portion, H, formed to lie near the edge of the door, said portion having a catch device and being provided with a slot to receivea guide-pin, as set forth.
