PATRICK J CONROY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR OR SHUTTER FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 332,495, dated December 15, 1885.
Application tiled April 29, 1885. Serial No. 163,843.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. CONROY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Door and Shutter Bolts or Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front View of a door orshutterboltembodyingmyinvention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent side views thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a door or shutter bolt, which may be tightly held in position and easily opened, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A and B represent face-plates, which are attached, respectively, to a door and door-frame or to shutters, as required.
0 represents a lug, which projects laterally from a head, D, and is somewhat oval in form, said head being eccentrically pivoted to a projection, E, on the faceplate A. From the faceplate B projects a catch, F, which has an opening, G, of the form of the lug O, and receives the same, and on the upper face of the catch F, back of the top of said opening. is an i11- clined or curved face, H, on which the lug C is adaptedto ride, as will be hereinafterset forth. The head D has a handle, J, pendent therefrom, whereby it may be readily rotated.
The operation is as follows: In order to bolt the door or shutters, the handle J is moved outwardly and upwardly, whereby the lug O (No model.)
is raised, and is thereby permitted to pass over the front end of the catch F. Then, by
lowering the handle, the lug enters the opening G, and, owing to the eccentric axis of the head D, said lug tightens against the walls of said opening, thus firmly holding the door or shutters in position. By raising the handle J the lug O, owing to the eccentric axis of the head D, emerges from the opening G in a direction upward and rearward, and then abuts against the face H of the catch, after the manner of a fulcrum, thus partly opening the door or shutters, and as the lug is now in its highest position (see Fig. 3) the door or shutters may be opened, said lug passing freely over the catch and the parts being disconnected, as is evident. This feature of the action of the lug on the face H is especially serviceable for 5 doors, shutters, 820., that stick or open hard.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A lug projecting laterally from a head having an eccentric axis, and a keeper or catch formed with an opening to receive said lug, combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forthr '2. A lug projecting from a head having an
