Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed August 26, 1908. Serial No. 450,302.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JASPER N. HILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a sash holder.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a sash holder comprising a plate fixed to the upper rail of a lower window sash, a pivotal latch member, a keeper fixed to the lower rail of an upper window sash and adapted to be engaged by the latch to lock the window sashes in a closed position, a cam lever pivotally supported by said plate and adapted to be moved into frictional engagement with the side of the upper sash to hold the sashes in various open adj usted positions and spring controlled means for locking the cam lever against movement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sash holder which is simple in construction, eflicient in operation, inexpensive in the manufacture and that can be conveniently and readily manipulated.
With these and other objects in view, the invention for example, consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully de scribed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood, that changes and variations may be made such as come properly within the scope of the claim hereunto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the meeting rails of upper and lower window sashes with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the meeting rails of the upper and lower sashes and a side elevation of the invention with the cam lever being shown out of frictional engagement with the upper sash. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4t of Fig. 1. Fig. 1- is a front view of the window lock. Fig. 5 is a side View of the cam lever. Fig. 6 is an end View of the window lock. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the window lock.
the meeting rail of the upper window sash and 6 the meeting rail of the lower Window sash having secured thereto adjacent to the side or vertical rail of the upper window sash a base plate 7 by screw fasteners 8 and which base plate has a thickened portion 9 extending longitudinally of the inner edge thereof. Upon the thickened portion 9 is a latch member 10 pivoted as at 11 and having a hook terminal 12 to engage an inverted U-shaped loop forming a bill 13 of a keeper 14 arranged in the path of movement of the hook terminal 12 and fixed by screw fasteners 15 to the upper face of the meeting rail 5 of the upper sash. Said latch member is also provided with a lever 16 at right angles to the hook terminal and adapted to be manually operated to throw the latter into locking engagement with the inverted U-shaped bill 13 of the keeper and when in such engagement will securely hold the upper and lower sashes in a closed locked position.
Rising from the base plate 7 are spaced cars 17 supporting a horizontal pin 18 forming a pivot for a window sash holder com-.
prising a cam 19 eccentrically mounted on the pivot between the ears 17 and formed with a lever 20 for manually operating the cam. In a portion of the, peripheral edge of the cam 19 is fitted a rubber strip forming a shoe 21 to frictionally engage the side rail of the upper window sash when the lever 20 is thrown to shift the cam 19 on its pivot to hold the upper and lower window sashes against movement after having been opened to any desired degree or closed.
Projecting from the cam 19 are a plurality of ratchet teeth 22 for engagement with a locking pawl or dog 23 the same having its pivot stem 24 mounted and projecting into a raised hollow portion 25 formed on the base plate and which stem 24 has its lower end split as at 26 to receive one end of a fiat tension spring 27 mounted in the hollow portion 25 of the base plate. Projecting at right angles from the pawl or dog 23 is an arm having an enlarged thumb head 28 whereby the said pawl or dog can be actuated to release the same from engagement with the ratchet teeth 22 of the cam so as to permit movement of the latter by its lever 20 to free the same from locked engagement l With the side rail of the upper sash and thereby permit the upper and lower sashes to be moved to any desired position. It is obvious that this cam 19 when moved by the lever 20 into locked engagement With the side rail of the upper sash the upper and lower sashes Will be prevented from rattling due to Windy Weather and alsoit is impossible to move the said sashes When so locked.
WVhat is claimed is i i The combination With upper and lower Window sashes, of a base plate fixed to one meeting rail,'spaced ears rising from said base plate, a cam eccentrically mounted between the ears and having a manually operable lever, a rubber shoe carried by the cam, ratchet teeth projecting from the cam, and a spring controlled locking dog pivotally mounted on the base plate and engaging the ratchet teeth to hold the cam in locked adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
