i Be it known that I, Jol-IN A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented 4certain'new` and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following isa specification. y
My present invention is an improvement -upon the type of sash lock described in Letters Patent Numbers 646,909, 712,306, and 949,359, issued to me under the dates of April 3, 1900, October 28, "1902, and February 15, 1910, respectively.
The object of my invention herein described is to combine in simple form the lock for the partly open sash with the `well estabi lished and generally accepted type oit lock for closed sashes, and to further simplify the construction to the end of electing.

In the several views 2 represents the upper rail of the lower window sashand 3 represents the lower rail of the upper sash. To the upper rail 2 of the lower sash ispivoted at 4 upon an `apertured base-plate 5, secured to the rail 2 by means of screws 6, a catch 7 which is formed with a recessed vertical Harige 8 having a linger-grip portion 9 and a slot 10 to be engaged in the usual and well known manner' with a stud 11 that `is commonly secured to the upper sash. For the purpose of locking both sash in their closed positions the stud 11 is rendered substantially a part ot the base-plate 12 or the upper sash, although mounted on neither, and for the purpose of locking the sash or sashes in a partly opened position said stud 11 is freed from this relation to the upper sash and becomes the anchorage for one end of a pair of links while the base-plate 12 of the upper sash becomes the anchorage for the opposite endof said links which are designed to limit the window opening tofventilation purposes and prevent entry of unauthorized persons. lIhe plate 12 is secured to the upper face of the lower rail of the upper sash by means of screws 13.
So far as .the catch portions 7, 8 and 9 and the engagement of the slot 10 with the stud 11 is concerned the operation is substantially the same as that of this type of sash locks or catches generally in use. In the present improvement provision is made to both hold the stud 11 substantially immovable with relation to the upper sash as if secured thereto, and to permit it to move with the lower sash by simply mounting it on the end of a pair of limited opening links and so arranging these links that by simply throwing them over as a unit to one side `of the catch they become `relatively fixed, while swinging them over to the opposite side of the catch permits them to move angularly relative to each other with a limited opening movement of either sash.
The referred to links are labeled 15 and 16 and are pivoted together on a pivot 17. To the free end of the link 15 is secured the stud 11 and the corresponding end of theV link 16 is pivoted at 14 to the base-plate 13 secured to the lower rail of the upper sash. On the link 15 is a lug 1S which by coming in contact with the link 16 serves as a stop which prevents alinement of the links to the extent of'bringing their pivot 15 to a dead center or in alinement with the stud 11 andthe pivot 14. Said stud 11 has a head 19 part of which iscut away to provide a straight side 20 which is even with the body of the stud. the remaining portion thereof projecting beyond the sides ot the stud. The side 20 is normally in substantially the plane of the upper edge of the slot 10. The stud 11 is arranged eccentrically with reference to the pivot 14, and when the links 15 and 16 lie together as they are shown inI full lines, and extend to the left of the catch 7 the axis or fulcrum of their combined pivot, 14, lies a little to the left of the stud 11, or is between said stud and the pivoted togather, or handle portion, of the links 15 ioo ` Copies o! this patent may be obtained for and 16. On the link 15 is ahook 21 which in the aforementioned parallel position of the links is in engagement with the lower edge of the link 16. Hence upward pressure againstthe stud 11 tending to raise the link 15 is communicated through said hook to the link 16, whereby both links become a unit. As said unit can swing only on the pivot 14 and the force applied to the lug` is to the right of the axis of the pivot 14, which tends to swing the lever composed of links 15 and 16 downward, said lever or links can not be moved by pressure against the lug 11. By manually swinging the links 15 and 16 together over to theright side the position of the pivot 14 is reversed with reference to the power exerted'on the stud 11 in attempting to open one of the sashes and the restraint of the hook 21 is removed by placing said hook above the link 16, permitting the link 15 to swing up, or the link 16 to swing down unrestrained by the hook.
That portion of the catch which is above the slot 10 is separately labeled 22 and terminates in a lug 23 that is bent out substantially at right angles to said part 22. The lug 23 serves as a stop which prevents the head 22 from moving out of the slot when the stud 11 is turned with the link 15 to project the uncut-away portion of the head above the slot 10. The function of the lug 23 may be performed in numerous modified ways and is determined by the form of catch ontlie lower sash.
When the links 15 and 16 are swung to that side of their substantially common axis 14 and 19 and thereby made practically a single member, the pivot 14 and the stud 19 are likewise made practically one and may be exactly alined, the intervening lin-ks being then simply the fastening means which make the sections 14 and 19 practically one member. rI`he stud sections 14 and 19 are shown slightly out of alinement simply as a matter of superabundance of caution, since the exact alinement gives each stud section no leverage with respect to the other section. The ends of the links having the common axis 14 and 19 maybe termed the inner ends and the ends that are pivoted together at 17 may bedesignated the swing ing ends.
I claim as my inventionj 1. The combination with an upper and a lower sash, of a pivotesupport on each one of said supports being a cam catch swiveled onto the sash, a pair of links pivoted at one end to one of said supports and having at the other end a headed stud adapted to be engaged by said catch asa single member on one of said pivot supports, said links constructed and arranged to move on the pivot which connects them only in one direction when moving apart angularly.
2. The combination with an upper and a lower sash, of a pair of links pivoted together and adapted to overlie each other and moving together as a single member, a pivot support on one sash for one end of said pair of links and a cam catch swiveled to the other sash, a headed stud on the opposite end of said pair of links to be engaged with or disengaged from said catch and to be drawn toward said catch, and a stop on one of said links which engages one side of the other link to prevent its angular movement in 1one direction relative to its companion 1in mally adjacent window sash frame-rails and the like, of a pivot support on one rail, a slotted catch swiveled to the other rail, a pair of links with pivoted together adjacent ends that are together movable as a unit on said pivot support to lie on either side thereof on one of said rails, one of the opposite ends of said links being pivoted to said pivot support, a stud on the other of said opposite ends .being engaged by said catch, said stud having an enlarged head with .a cut away portion that provides a straight edge within the plane of the slot in said catch, a hook or stop on one link which engages the under side of the companion link when said links lie together on one side of said pivot support, and a laterally projecting lug on said catch above the open end of the slot therein past which the uncut away portion of said head can not pass. 4 4. The combination with a pair of rails each movable away fromthe other only in one direction, of a pair of links having inner ends upon which said links may swing as a unit to either side of an axis common to both links, and having outer or swinging ends pivoted to each other and on which latter pivot each link is movable away from the other only in one direction, a common axis for said inner ends which consists of stud sections one of said sections being con nected with one of said rails and the other of said sections being provided witha head and normally free, a cam catch swiveled to one rail and rotatable to engage and disengage the normally free stud section.`
