GATE-"FASTENING.
Specification of Letters mat.
Patented Dec. 23, 1919.
Application filed May 29, 1919. serial in. 305,624.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON H. S iii'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Hancock and Stateof Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate-Fastening, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gate or door tenings, the principal object being to provide a fastening which is adapted to be applied to the gate or door or door frame and to receive a flexible element attached to either the door or frame in a manner as to permit the door being locked in a closed position or in a slightly open position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a: fastener of this character which will retain the gate in the positions mentioned and absolutely prevent the gate from being fully opened.
Another object of this invention is to provide a gate fastener of this character which may be used in conjunction with any type of chains that are used in connection wlth gates or the like and which may also be used in connection with any type of padlock that is ordinarily used to look a chain to the usual type of staple.
Another general object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists of .the combinations of elements constructions and formations, and general assemblage, the details of which will be specifically referred to and recited in the subjoined claims, one embodiment of the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved fastener in operative position on a gate showing the chain locked to the fastener; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device removed from the gate.
On the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like parts in all the views the numeral 5 designates a stationary member of a building construction while 6 indicates the door or gate which has the usual chain or flexible element, 7 connected thereto.
Myiinprov'ed fastener includes a block plate 10 provided with screw receiving openings through which extend screws or other fastening's 11. Formed on the plate and extending longitudinally thereof is an upstanding central yoke 12 which is provided with aiigula'rly disposed slot 13, the outer end of which is opeii to permit the reception of a link ofthe chain 7. Formed with the plate 10 and the hook 12 at the lower end thereof is a padlock receiving member or hasp 14.
In the use of the device one link of the chain is engaged in the slot 13 and one of the links allowed to hang parallel with the hasp 14: and the shackle of a padlock inserted in the hasp 1 1 and the adjacent link of the chain and looked as illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be manifest that this fastener is of such a construction as to permit the door to be locked in a slightly opened position or in a closed position. If desired a hook may be carried by one of the links of the chain 7 and detachably engaged with the hasp 1 1 when it is desired to retain the gate against swinging. A hook 15 is provided for this purpose.
It will also be noted that this device is formed in a one piece casting and that only few operations are required to construct the device.
This disclosure is merely illustrative and it is to be understood that the same may be modified in many respects and that my limits of such modification are governed only by what is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described, a plate adapted to be fixed to a member, a hook formed thereon for the reception of a flexible element, and a hasp mounted on the plate through which the shackle of a lock is adapted to be passed to engage with the flexible element.
2. In a device of the character described, a plate, an upstandin hook formed on the plate and extending longitudinally of thev plate and provided with a slot for the reception of a flexible element, and a hasp formed with the plate and disposed below the hook for the reception of the shackle of a padlock, the shackle being engageable with the flexible element to lock the same against movement.
3. In a gate fastening, the combination with a gate and a chain carried thereby, of a plate fixed to an object, an upstanding hook formed thereon and having an angu larly disposed slot formed therein and having an open end, the slot being adapted to receive one link of the chain, part of the chain depending downwardly from the link engaged in the slot, and a hasp formed with the plate, the hasp being parallel with one of the links of the chain, and a lock having its shackle engaged through the hasp and said parallel link.
&. An article of manufacture comprising a plate, an outstanding slotted member cast therewith adapted to receive a flexible elerent, and, a hasp cast with the outstanding member, the hasp being adapted to receive either the shackle of a lock which is engage able with one link of the flexible element beyond the slotted member or to be engaged by a hook depending from the flexible element.
An article of manufacture comprising an outstanding member provided with an open slot for the reception of a chain link and to hold the same against turning, and a hasp carried by the outstanding member therebeneath, the hasp being disposed in the same plane as the outstanding member, and adapted to receive a hook or to receive a locking element engaged with one link of the chain.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
