Description
PATENT EErcE.
HENRY N. AVERY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IM PROVEM ENT IN LATC H-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5l ,787.. dated January 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. AVERY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latch-Fastenings; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The presentinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in latch-fastenings for doors of barns, out-buildings, &c.; and it consists in a peculiar construction of parts to adapt the device to serve the combined purposes of a latch and a padlock-hasp, as hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are illustrated, Figure l being a front view of the saine, and Fig. 2 a view of its top or upper edge.
a a in the drawings represent the latch-bar, hung by its end b to the outer end, c, of a tixed staple-ring, d, which, by lits screw-shaft j', is inserted or screwed into the door to which t-he latch-fastening is to be applied, a propershay d wood-screw thread being formed about and tround the same thereof, and a screw- I g, applied to its inner end, if so desired, t more securely hold it.
The latch-bar a swings upon the staple d, moving in and guided by the clasp l1l of a small metallic plate, Z, secured to the door by screws, or in any other proper manner, and its outer end, m, extends across the joint of the door with the janib, and interlocks by its opening a with the notch o of the fixed staple or catch 19, similarly secured in the jamb of the door to that described ot' the fulcrum for the latch by its screw-shaft q, with a woodscrew` thread formed around and about the same. i
In the outer end of the fixed staple-catch p is made an opening, r, suitable to receive and allow the link of a padlock, s, to pass through it, so that when the said padlock has been hung within the said aperture by its link and locked with any suitable-shaped key the latch cannot possibly be disconnected from its fixed catch, thus preventing the door from being opened, except by persons having authority so to do.
From the above description it is obvious that by my arrangement ai'd construction of the latch-fastening a very simple and strong fastening is obtained, and one which can be with facility locked and secured by a padlock or other suitable locking device when so desired.
On the latch-bar is a handle, A,made of the shape of a ring, by which the latch can be easily lifted when so desired, and it is unfastened, while at the same time it serves as a hook or holder for the reception of the padlock when detached from the latch-staple catch.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the conibined latch and padlock hasp herein described, consisting of the staples el p, looped bar a my, confining-loop h, notch o, and aperture r, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes herein specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 21st day of August, 1865.
HENRY N. AVERY.
