Description
W. N. MARTIN. SASH HOLDER AND PASTENER.
No. 33,488. Patented Oct. 15, 1861.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. MARTIN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SASH HOLDER AND FAsTENER;
Specification forming part of Ietterdfatent No. 38,488, dated October 15, 18,61.
To all whom it may concern: t
Be it known that 1, WIL IAM N. MARTIN,
of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Window-Sash Holder and Fastener; and I do hereby dclarthat 'the followingisa full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a portion of this specification. v
Fjgurel is a perspective view of a detached window-frame containing a single sash b, which has two of my improved sash-fasteners combined therewith; Fig. 2, a section in the line 7 y of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the sash portion of my improved sash-fastener, and Figs. 4 and 5 views which illustrate in detail the construction of said sashvfastener.
. Thesash portion of my improved sash-fastener is composed of the two angular handlevers efcf, the pivot z, the spring g, and the embracing-box (Z [1, the shape, arrangement,
and combination of which parts are clearly.
represented in the accompanying drawings The window-frame portion of my improved sash-fastener co'usists of a rack-bar It, the
'teeth of which are soproportioned as to allow both the 'outwardly-projecting tooth-shaped ends of the hand-levers e e to simultaneously the spring S8l'\ S the outward the tooth-shaped ends of said levers through-appropriate apertures in the outer fit into the notches between the teeth, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be perceived thatthc shape and arrangementot thehand-levcrs a care such that purpose .of forcing said rackside of the casing of the same, and that this is accomplished by forcing the inwardly-pro- I jccting portions of said levers outward from each other. Consequently the act of draw-' ing the said inwardly-projecting ends of the levers e c nearer to each other by closing the hand upon them will draw the tooth-shaped outer ends of said levers back into the casing of the same;
- When the sash which is to be supplied-with m' y improved sash-fasten er has a sufficient degree of thickness, the levcr-box d h is let into a mortise formed in one of the side bars of the sash, and the hand-levers e 6 project inwardly through suitable apertures formed in the bottom of saidmortise, as shown in Fig. 2, and when thus arranged the rack-bar Z- is secured to the portion of the window- 'jamb immediately opposite the onterface of the sash-bar ,Which receives the said levercase, as also shown in Fig. 2.
My improved sash-fastener may be combined with a car-windougor any other window which has a thin sash. by securing the lever-case (Z h to the face of one of the sashhars, and'then securing the rack-bar k to the inner face of the strip a, which retains the said sash in its position within the windowframe, as shown in Fig .l.
It will be perceived thatni y improved sasl fastener will securely hold a sash in any posi'tion, either open or closcd, that may be given .to it, and also that the levers e e serve the purpose of handles, and thereby give afirmer hold for the hand of the operator in opening and closing the sash.
, Having thus fully described my improved sash-fastener, what I claim therein as new,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement ot' the levers ef e f, the
pivot i, the spring 5;, and the casing d h with each other and with the rack-bar 7c, in the manner herein set forth.
The above specification of my improved window-sash holder andfastener signed and witnessed this 8th day of April, 1861.
