Description

UNITED sTAJTEs PATENT oEEioE.
RUFUS PORTER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
ELIND-EASTENVING.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, RUEUs PORTER, of Washington, in the `District of Columbia, have `invented anew and useful Improvement in Window Blind or- Shutter Fastenings; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents the plate or blank of one of the sliding` catches; Fig. 2 .is a perspective view of a sliding catch with its connecting staples, and the hook by which it is held in its open position; Fig. 3 is a front view of a sliding catch withfits spring and its connections; and Fig. t is a vertical View of a pair of sliding plates or catches, one in its closed position, and the other open; the bottom of a window, and portion of a house being designated by dotted lines; also the blinds to which the catches are supposed to be connected.
The nature of this invention consists mainly in so constructing a window blind fastening that it will become fastened in either an open or closed position, and whereby the blind when open, may be unfastened and closed wit-hout the usual laborious process of reaching an arm out of the window.
The sliding catch A, consists of a single plate of brass or iron, and is! connected to the blind by three staples e e e, two of which are attached to the front, or inside face of the blind, and the other to the bottom thereof; the sliding catch being so bentthat while the main portion thereof is vertical and in Contact with the face of the blind, the other part which terminates in two lateral catches c o, is horizontal, and in contact with the bottom thereof. A short groove is made in the bottom of the blind, to receive the helical spring s, which is connected to the 23,043, dated February 22, 18159'.
plate at b, while the opposite end, terminating in a straight wire d, is inserted into the bottom of the blind, so as to draw the sliding catch in the direction opposite to that of the hinges. A hook 7L is attached to the outside of a house and to this hook one of the lateral catches takes when the blind is thrown back; and a Vertical pin 1 is inserted in the bottom of the window frame, to which pin the other lateral catch takes when the blind is closed. The end of the sliding catch nearest the hinged edge of the blind, is bent in the form of a ring n, of a convenient size to receive the end of a persons finger, whereby, when the blind is open, and fastened back, it may be both unfastened and closed. To prevent the possibility of opening the blinds from the outside, a pin u may be set behind each lateral catch, as shown in Fig. t. i
In the drawing, Fig. 4, B B designate the bottoms of the blinds; H H, the walls of a house, and Wv the window seat, or bottom of a window.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the lateral catches with the elevated finger socket the whole consisting of a single plate which is so formed that while the catch end thereof is horizontal and constitutes `right and left Catches and is connected to the bottom of the shutter, the opposite end is vertical, and is connected to the face of the shutter at some distance above the bottom thereof, and oonstit-utes a finger socket or hook near the hinged edge of the shutter, to be drawn back by a finger for the purpose of unfastening the shutter (when open) and closing the same, as herein described.
