ATTACHMENT FOR OPENING AND CLOSING DOORS, 85o.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,381, dated May 25, 1858.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, A. lV. lVEs'rER, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Attachment to be Applied to Folding or Double Doors, lVindow Shutters, Blinds, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Y Figure l, is an inner side view of a pair of folding doors with my invention applied to them. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of ditto looking upward a, x, Fig. 1 indicates the plane of section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

This invention consists 1n attaching to each shutter or door at its Inner side an arm, to the outer ends of which levers are pivoted, the inner ends of which are of semi-circular form, provided with teeth which gear into each other, the parts being so arranged as hereinafter described, that by moving one shutter the other will be operated simultaneously in the same direction.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, A, represent folding or double doors, which are secured to the casing B, in the usual way. To the inner side of each door A, at their upper parts near their upper hinges, arms C, are connected by a pivot or oint a, one arm C, being attached to each door. These arms C, are constructed of metal and at their outer ends they are connected by pivots or joint-s b, to levers D, D, one to each. The levers D, D, are attached by fulcrum pins c, to the under side of the lintel d, of the casing, and the inner ends of saidA levers are of semi-circular form and toothed, the teeth designated by e, gearing into each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The fulcrum pins c, c, of the levers D, D, pass through a metal plat-e F, which is secured to the lintel CZ. The levers D, D, and arms C, C, may be of any suit-able thickness according to the size of the doors or shutters.

From the above description of parts it will be seen that owing to the connection formed between the two doors or shutters A, A, by means of the levers D, D, and arms C, C, arranged as shown, both doors will open and close simultaneously by actuating one.

This improvement may be applied to doors or shutters at a small cost and will tend to prevent the slamming of the same. It will be valuable for small or medium sized doors which if one be only opened suicient space would not be afforded for persons to pass through conveniently.

In applying the device to window shutters, it may be attached to the sill instead of the lintel.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is,

The levers D, D, pivoted to the lintel (l, of the casing or the sill thereof, the inner ends of the levers gearing into each other and the outer ends connected by the arms C, to the doors or shutters A, A, the whole being arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
