SPRING-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 1, 1910. Serial No. 595,086.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PERKINS E. HOWARD,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be I a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to spring hinge, more suitable for screen and barn doors, and has for its object the production of a hinge that will throw the door shut and open as desired.
Another object is to provide means by hinge as seen when the door is opened to 180 degrees. Fig. 4, when opened to 90 degrees.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. 1,-designates a section of a casing. 2, a section of a door.
My hinge is substantially in two sections,
door jamb or I 3 and 4 having right angle flanges 3 and 4.
Flanges 3 have lateral bends 15. Said flanges and bends are provided with holes to receive pivot-pins 12. The object of the bends 15, is to hold the said pivot pins perpendicular to the plane of the flanges. Flanges 4, are pivotally positioned on the aforesaid pivot-pins, these hinge sections are fastened to the door jamb and door with screws 19. On pins 12 are pivotally positioned yokes 5, in the free ends of said yokes are pivot-pins 11. Similar yokes 6 are pivotally mounted astraddle of the flanges 3 and pivotally aflixed thereto with a rod 9. Links 7 and 8 are placed on the pivot-pins 11, the ends of links 7 have lateral bends 14 and are provided with holes to receive the rod 10, the outer ends of the open.

To section 4 is aflixed a plate 18 with screws 20. Said plate being provided with a pierced lug 17, and a spiral spring 16 is hooked in said lug and to the rod 10. It is obvious that if the hinge section 4 is extended out farther on the door, the closure of the door would be effected with less spring power, it is apparent that the spring exerts its force from both ends, a. part of its force being applied to the links 7 and 8 which closes and holds the door shut, but when the door is opened to 180 degrees the links are out of commission and the spring force is exerted on the lug 17 which continuously holds the door It is further noted that when the door' is closed it is continuously spring pressed, and when opened to 90 degrees the spring assumes a neutral attitude, but when opened beyond 90 degrees the spring immediately becomes effective and throws the said door open to 180 degrees and again it is spring pressed. Hence, I have a hinge which is substantially double acting.
