:Doon-SPRING.
To all whom t may concer/rt:
' Beit known that I, VILLIAM WV. WoLFn, a citizen of theiUnited States, residing at East Highlands, in the-county of San Ber- 'nardino an'dfState ofCalifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Springs, of which the followingis a specification.` ff
The object of this invention is to provide a 'spring adapted toclose-fand hold closed a door, gate or like swinging closure hinged to swing inV one direction, yand the partsV of this character in which an' efficient closing action is obtained with the'slightest opening of thepdoor and the door will be normally n held under tension in the closed relation. Vith other objects in View, which will be referred to,'my invention consistsin the pee culiar, combination and novel arrangement of parts, such. as will be hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing my invention applied to a gate and with'the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a top plan v'view of the disclosure in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a View in elevation ofthe gate in an open position and shows the relation of the parts in that connection.
The gate 1 is hinged at 2 to the gate post Y 3 in position to swingv and close against the opposite gate post et. A bell-crank plate 5 f is pivoted at its angle at 6 to the body of 8 to the gate post '3, and a link 9 connects the gate. A stirrup 7 made curved as better shownin Fig. 2, is pivoted at its end'as at loop of the stirrup'f? with one of the arms of the bell-crank plate 5.V A-coil spring 10 'is secured at one end by ay staple or other fastening means 11 adjacent'the hinge side of the gate 1, and this spring 10 is connected atits free'end by a link 12 with the free arm l of rthev bell-crank'plate 5. e
When the parts are in the closed position as shown in Fig. l, the spring 10 exerts the greatest tension to hold the gate in the closed position, as in this position the spring is Y working with the full leverage Lof the bellcrank plate around its pivot 6 to draw l against the link 9 and the stirrup 7. As the Specicaton of Letters Patent. Y
rat-enten. oct. ie, i915.
Application filed July 14, 1914. Serial No. 850,991.
Y gate 1 is `swung to its open position the belltion ofthe links 12 with the plate 5 and at the same time lengthens the turning leverage of the connection of the link 9 with this plate.
to the relation shown in Fig. 3 of the draw'- ing, and the link 12 is carried to have its pivotal connection with the plate above the mounting 6 of the plate upon the door. With the parts in this relation, the point of connection of the link9 with the plate 5 is disposed to exert the greatest possible leverage around the mounting 6, and the throwing of the link 12to the position indicated lessens the leverage drawing action exerted bythe spring and creates aY drawing tension substantially against a dead center. l/Vith theparts in this relation, the door or closure when swung to an open position will 'be maintained in this open position until given opening and closing, and it will be understood that other slight changes might be made inthe form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention,'and hence I do not yvvish to,vr be limited to the disclosure except for such limitations as the claims may import.
1. A door spring comprising a bell-crank plate mounted on the door with its turning axis at right angles to the central axis upon which the door swings, a stirrup connected lwith one of the arms of said bell-crank plate and pivoted to the door post, and a spring connected with the remaining arm of said plate and secured at its free end to the door.
2. Adoor spring comprising a bell-crank plate, a curved member pivotally mounted at its one end upon the door post and connected with said'bell-crankkplate in a manner that as the door is opened the plate is swung about its pivotal mounting, and a coil spring connected with the free arm of As the gate is brought tothe full? 'open position, the bell crank plate 5 is swung n vshortens thefturning leverage of the connecfmeasure the action of the door or gate in position. v n
3. A door spring comprising a bell-crank` said bell-erank` plate and attached to theY door to resiliently oppose swinging andto return the bell-Crank plate tothe normal plate mounted on the door, a link pivotally Connected with one of the arms of said plate',
a curved stirrup connected with said link and pivoted to the door post,ka second link Copiesof this patent may be obtained for` connected With the remaining arm of the plate, a spring Connected at its one end'with therdoor and at its remaining end With said second link. ,Y y 1 Ll.
