SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,538, dated March 9,1886.
Application filed July 13, 1885.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Voenn, of Fort Lee, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, haveiuventedan Improvement in Door-Stops, of which the following isaspecification.
\rVith doors that are closed by a spring considerable noise often arises from the slamming of the door, and when the spring is made weaker the door is likely to partially open by the action of the wind.
My present improvement is made for accomplishing the twofold object of preventing the door slamming and of holding the same with a suflieient force to keep the same in a position to which it may be moved.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the holder and the spring with which it is connected. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 8 is a separate View of the rubber roller and the stop that acts upon the same. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the bolt that supports the elastic roller, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the latch for operating the gong.
A portion of the door is shown at A, and B represents a portion of the frame.
The hinges of the door may be of any desired character; also, the spring employed to close the door may be of ordinary construction. I however have shown the case 0, from which an arm, D, extends, and the same forms one part of the stop. I have shown a .link, (2, pivoted at the end of the arm D and connecting the same to the plate d upon the door, so that when the door A is opened the stop-arm D will be swung back, and in so doing the spring within the case 0 will be strained; butI do not limit myself to any par ticular kind of spring. The stop-arm D is made with an arch, D, and a finger, D, the diameter being slightly less than the diameter ofthe stop-roller E, that is supported by a bracket-plate, F, and stud-boltf, which plate, by preference, is fastened to the door-frame; but the.position of the parts might be reversed, so that the stop-roller Ewould be upon the door and the arch D and finger D upon the door-frame. This stop-roller Eis elastic,
and as the stop-finger D pressts against the side of the same as the door swings the said finger D compresses the roller as the roller turns upon its axis, thereby gradually stop- Serial No. 171,421. (No model.)
ping the momentum of the door, until finally the stop-arm and stop-roller are brought sufficiently close together for the roller at one side to coincide, or nearly so, with the bottom of the arch D, thus forming a perfect elastic stop that prevents the door slamming, and the finger D acting against one side of the elastic stop-roller E, holds the door from moving by any slight pressure, such as that resulting from any currents of air; but such finger D releases its hold upon the elastic stop-roller E as soon as suflicient force is applied to separate the stop-arm from the stop-roller. It is usually preferable to slot the bracket-plate F where the stud-boltfpasses through the same, and to make use of washers, so that the axis or stud-bolt f of the stop-roller E may be ad-. justed to occupy the proper position relatively to the stop-arch Dand stop-finger D", and the boltf, that forms the axle for the roller, is square where it passes through the slot of the bracket; but the center of this square is not in line with the center of the axle, so that by changing position of the square in the slot the axle of the roller will cause the roller to press more or less firmly against the finger D".
It is convenient to combine along with the door-spring and door-stop an alarm-cell, so that the bell will be rung when the door is opened. To effect this object I support the gong-bell K upon a stud, It, projecting from the arm D, and the hammerL is upon aspringarm, Z, that passes out from the stock Z, that is pivoted at I to the back of the finger D", and there is a spring, S, to swing the hammer upon its pivot I.
Upon the bracket-plate F is an arm, T, to which is pivoted the latch to, and there is a turning plate, 12, which, when swung up against the end of the latch 10, swings the said latch u out ofthe path of the stock of the hammerL; but when this plate '22 is turned aside the spring 12 of the latch to throws the end of such latch into the path of the stock l, so that said latch 10 holds back the hammer-stock and hammer while the stop-arm D is swung in opening the door, and the spring S projects the hammer, striking the hell or gong K, as soon as the stock Z swings clear of the spring latch a striking the gong.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the elastic stop- K, supported by a stud on the stopurm D, the hammer L, the stock Z for the same, pivoted at I, the spring S, latch to, and turning plate 11 5 upon the bracket of the stop-roller E, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 7th day of July, A. D. 1885.
CHARLES VOGEL.
