Description

' J. CLOSE 82: I. BUOKMAN,J1.
HINGE.
No. 51,426. Patented Dec. 12, 1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
JEREMIAH .oLosE AND IRA BUOKMAN, .111, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT HINGES.
Specification forming part of LettersRaten-t No. 51,426, dated December 12, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JEREMIAH CLOSE and IRA BUOKMAN, J r.,' of the city oily-Brooklyn, in
the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in right and left opening double-acting spring butt-hinges for doors for public \and other buildings; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref
erence being bad to the accompanying draw ,ings, making a part of this specification, in
Which- Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a closed shows a frontface view with both leaves or wings spread open. Fig. 5 is a vertical sec- 1 tion through the spread butt-hinge.
The object of our invention is to make-double-jointed hinges-in which the springs are incased in the joint or around the pintle to allow the door to be opened either inward or out ward, thus making one pair of hinges answer the better purpose of two pairs of butts, dis- 'pensin g entirely with-the tumbling stiles, which,
are very objectionable in more ways than one,
' as may be fully demonstrated.
Ourinvention consists in constructing butthinges with three leaves in such manner asto allow the door to swing on them and open eitherinward or out, the center leaf forming a portion of the two joints, one on each side of the door, in which coiled springs-may be placed of sufficient power to close the door, the operation of the spring upon the joint of the hinge being similar to those embraced in the Patents Nos. 29,212 and 36,976.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our improved right and left opening spring butt-hinge, we will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
' For all heavy doors in public buildings and places of much resort it is desirable, and has become almost indispensable, to have the doors swing both ways, either in or out, and,
y when passed. to close themselves and remain in in in their proper place, which must necessarily be done by unteracting forces, there being no rabbet ob ,ruction in the jambs or doorcasings to fix hold them in position. For this purpose we construct our simplified improved spring butt-hinge, which consists of two outside leaves or wings, A and A the one to be screwed to the jamb or casing, the other to the edge of the door.
' Between the leaves A A is the connectingplate B, which has the knuckles G O, for the joints of the hinges on both of its edges, into which similar knuckles formed on the leaves A A are fitted, so that one leaf folds up against one side of the plate B and the other on the opposite side when the door or hinge is closed, as seen in Fig. 1.
-Helical or coiled springs ff may be placed in sleeves orfopenings d 61 within the joints of the-hinges, they being of sufficient power and so arranged inirelationto the-plate B that theyt'end .to hold the leaves A A closed up against the sides'of the plate when,'not forced away from it, as in opening the doorin either direction, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.
Thus it will be seen that in hin gin g doors by butts constructed upon our improved plan as above described but a single pair of butts or hin ges are necessary, whereas in hanging doors with the two-leafed butts, as those set forth in the Patents Nos. 29,212 and 36,976, above referred to," it requires two pairs of the hinges, and between. the ;pair;that allows the door to open one 'way and those that admit of its being opened in the other direction there has to be placed a tumbling stile, as it is technically-called, so that when swung in one direction the strip or tumbling stile opens with the door, and when opened in the other direction it remains held against the jamb or door-casing and varies the width of the opening very essentially.
Thus it will be seen that our improved double-acting double-jointed butt-hinge will entirely remedy all of the difficulties heretofore existing and meet all of the requirements, and furnish a cheaper, more substantial, and much neater mode of hinging doors which'operate uniformly well both ways.
We do not claim anythingin relation to' the springer its location or manner of operating to close the (1001'; but,
' Having fully described our invention, what; we claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The center plate, 13, having a hinge-joint on both edges, in combination with the sleeves 1 d, the springs ff, and outside leaves, A A, o
; substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
