GATE -HINGE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed October 8,1906. Serial No- 338,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. GEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Bear Lake and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved device for connecting a gate to its post and permitting it to be raised on opening.
The object of the invention is to provide a door or gate with upper and lower members designed to operate in conjunction with each other to permit the raising of the gate on the opening thereof, one of said members having means for limiting the outward swing of the gate.
In the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters are used to represent corresponding parts Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a gate and post connected by this improved hinge, a portion of the gate being broken away for convenience in illustration. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the lower hinge in open position. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the upper hinge in open position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the upper hinge 1 which constitutes the upper member of the connecting device, comprises a fixed member 2 in the form of a casting having apertured upper and lower ends or lugs 3 and 4 for attaching it to a door frame or to a gate post as 16. This fixed member is provided with a laterally extending arm 5 preferably made integral therewith and having an aperture 6 extending longitudinally therethrough at its free end to receive a pintle. The movable member 7 of this upper hinge 1 is constructed similarly to the member 2 with apertured ends or lugs 8 and 9 for connection to the gate, and the knuckle 10 of this member 7 is preferably made of less thickness than the knuckle 5 of the fixed member as it is disposed above and rests on the knuckle 5 when the gate is in closed position. The knuckle 10 is also provided with a longitudinal aperture 11 in its free end for the passage'of the pintle 12 which secures the two members together. This pintle 12 is made considerably longer than the two knuckles through which it passes and is provided at its upper end with a head 13 and at its lower end with a stop 14 for preventing its withdrawal when the gate is opened.
The lower hinge comprises a fixed member 20 preferably made in the form of a casting or plate 21 having apertured upper and lower ends or lugs 22, and 23 'for securing it to the gate post. This member 20 also has two lateral arms 24 and 25 preferably integral with said member spaced apart and projecting laterally from the plate 21, the top arm 24 has its lower face preferably made straight and arranged in a horizontal position predetermined distances from the lower arm and its lower arm 25 has its upper face inclined upwardly from its free end towards the upper end of the member. The free ends of these arms 24 and 25 are provided with registering apertures for the reception of the pintle 35. The movable member 30 of this lower hinge consists of a casting having ap ertured upper and lower ends or lugs 31 and 32 and a laterally projecting arm 33 integral therewith and adapted to extend between the arms 24 and 25 of the fixed member and be connected therewith by means of the pintle 35. The upper face of this arm 33 is made straight to lie in a horizontal plane and fit closely against the lower face of the arm 24 of the fixed member when the gate is opened and the lower face of the arm 33 is inclined upwardly from its base to its free end and adapted to lie on the inclined side or face of the arm 25 and to ride thereon when the gate is opened until the outer edge thereof engages the outer edge of the inclined face of the arm 24 and in connection with the upper face of the member 33 and the lower face of the arm 24 locks the gate against further backward swinging.
In the use of these improved hinges the fixed members 2 and 20 of the upper and lower hinges are secured to the gate post 16 by screws or nails passed through their apertured ends or lugs. The movable member 7 of the upper hinge is secured to the gate 15 in position so that the knuckle 10 thereof will overlap and rest on the knuckle 5 of the fixed member 2, and these members are loosely connected by the long pintle 12 which permits the movable member to be raised or lowered in relation to the knuckle 5, carrying the pintle 12 with it.
The movable member 30 of the lower hinge is attached to the gate 15 in position to extend between the arms 24 and 26 of the fixed member 20 with its lower inclined face engaging the upper inclined face of the arm 25, said arms being connected by the pintle 35. When the gate is opened the arm 33 rides upon the cam face of the knuckle 24 lifting the gate with it until the upper face of said arm 33 comes in contact with the lower face of the arm 24 and the edges of the inclined faces engage and hold the gate firmly against further outward swinging. The extent of outward movement is determined by the space between the arms of the lower hinge.
When it is desired to keep the gate in open position it must be held by some means as immediately it is released the inclined faces of the knuckles 25 and 33 cause the gate to swing forward and close. These hinges when applied to a gate or door cause it to be selfclosing and hold it closed against accidental opening.
I claim as my invention 1. A hinge comprising a fixed member having a lat orally-extending arm with a longitudinally-arranged cam face and a swinging and vertically-movable member having a cooperating cam face to ride on the cam face of the arm of the fixed member, said fixed member having means for limiting the movement of the movable member on the cam face of the lateral arm of the fixed member beyond a predetermined point to cause the movable member to swing forward as soon as released.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of co-operating leaves, one leaf having a laterally-extending arm in the form of a plate with its upper edge inclined downwardly from its connection with the leaf, toward its free end, and a lateral arm spaced above said inclined arm, and the other leaf provided with a laterally-extending arm having a flat horizontally-arranged upper face, and an upwardlyinclined lower face, said incline extending from its base to its free end, the lateral arm of said first-mentioned leaf being spaced above its inclined arm a distance sufli- 15 cient to permit the knuckle of the other leaf to have a predetermined movement therebetween.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
