Leners Patent No. 90,504,- lmz May 25, 1869.
IMPROvBD HINGE AND SPRING- COMIBINED.
Howr The Schedule referred to in thse Letters Patent and making part of the lame. A
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. GoWnLL, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Hinges; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to' the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a hinge, which shall at the same time act as, and in fact be a spring for closin gates, and which, by a very slight modification, may e used as a doorsprlng.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l-is a perspective ofthe casing, showing the spring inside of the same;
Figure 2 is a perspective of the arm, forming, with the casingfthe hinge; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of a door, showing my invention adapted as a door-spring.
Figure 4 is a cross-section ofthe top ofthe casing.
A represents a metal casing of suitable size, open at the inner side, and provided with ears or iianges B B, having holes for the insertion of screws, that the same may be attached to a gate-post. 4
Through the casing A runs a vertical shaft, C, having its bearings in the top and bottom of the easing, and around which is placed a spiral or coil-spring, D, the lower end of which spring is inserted in a hole in the bottom of the casing, and the upper end inserted in a hole in the shaft C, thus connecting the shaft to the casing.
The spring D may be tightened or vloosened by changing the position of vits lowerend.
The shaft O is prevented from turning more than a certain distance by a pin, a, iusertedin saidshaft, near the top of the casing, which pin bears against a flange or projection on the inner side of the casing.
The upper end of the shaft G passes through the top of the casing A, and is out square above the same, as seen in iig. 1.
E represents an arm, of suitable size and shape to be attached to the gate, and the outer endV of .which arm is provided with a. square -hole to fit on the end of the shaft C, thps forming an ordinary lift-oli` hinge, with the 'addition of the spring, which acts, so as to close the gate whenever the same has been opened.
This hinge may be used as a common door-spring l by securing the casing to the upper part of' the door,` and substituting an arm, F, having a hook at its outer end, in place ofthe arm E, the hook on the arm F to be connected by a rod '01"link, G, to the upper sill of the door, as shown in iig. 4.
Having thus fully described'my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 'y The arrangement, with `the casing A, shaft O, and spring D, of the arms E and F, and rod or link G, so
as to form a combined hinge and spring, or spring alone,
substantially as herein Set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto setmy hand, this 25th day of February, 1869.
JNO. J. COWELL.
