LOCK-HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,086, dated November 12, 1889.

Application led December l, 1888. Serial No. 292,378. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES SYDENHAM BAKER, gexgtleman, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and Improved Self-Locking Hinge for Window- Blinds, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to design an improved self locking hinge for windowblinds, by which the blind may be thrown open without being raised, and when open automatically locked by a device which can be unlocked without vertically disturbing the blind and it consists, essentially, of a bolt arranged in connection with a pair of hinges, one hinge being formed to carry the bolt and the other having a notch to receive the end of the bolt, the whole being otherwise formed substantially as hereinafter explained.

Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved hinge as it will appear when attached to a blind. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my hinge as it will appear when the blind is open. Fig. 3 is a view of the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. et is a perspective view of one of the hinge-plates. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other hinge-plate, shown upside down, showing also the lockingbolt.

A blind provided with my improved hinge may be opened and closed Without being moved vertically, and when open it is automatically and rigidly locked.

I claim no peculiarity in the construction of the upper hinges, as my lock is placed upon the lower hinge. j

Referring to the details of the drawings by letter, O is a hinge-plate, having formed in the inner surface of the eye thereof a vertical slot a, and on the bottom of said plate is formed a'rib G,which,when the blind is open, butts against the notch F, formed on the hinge-plate E, said hinge plate being also formed with a iXed pintle E', and at its lower end with a projection or shoulder D on one side of said notch F.

A is a bolt working in the slot a in the eye of the hinge-plate C and formed with a lateral projection B, projecting through a vertical slot or opening a in the said eye.

The bolt A is tapered on the side which butts againstthe side of the notch F. This taper is made for the purpose of permitting the bolt to drop down and force the end of the rib G against the projection D and thus rigidly lock the hinge.

In order to close the blind, it is merely necessary to seize the projection B of the bolt A and raise the bolt until its point is out of the notch clear of the plate hinge E, when the blind will be free to swing to on its hinge. When the blind is thrown open again, it moves freely until the point of the bolt A reaches the notch F,when by its own gravity the bolt A drops into the notch and the hinge is once more locked, as above described.

I do not claim, broadly, a vertically-movable bolt or pin to lock the hinge when open, as I am aware that such has been heretofore proposed.

Vhat I claim as my invention isl. A hinge-plate E, having aV fixed pintle and a notch F, combined with the hinge-plate C, formed with an eye having therein upon its inner surface avertical slot, and a bolt independent of the pintle and arranged to move freely in the slot in the eye in close proximity to the pintle, substantially as described.

2. The hinge-plate E, formed with a fixed pintle and with a notch F in its outer surface and a projection D on one side of said notch, combined with the hinged plate O, formed withan eye having a rib G, formed on its under surface and with a vertical slot in its inner. surface, and a bolt A, working loosely in said slot, substanlially as and for the purpose specified.
