APPLICATION FILED AUG. 17, 1907.

anoint LYDIA HELEN DENNIS, OF GRATZ, KENTUCKY.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed August 1'7. 1907. Serial No. 389,025.
i To all whom it may concern:
' residing at Gratz, in the county of Owen and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a hinge which can be locked in any position so that a door, window blind or gate provided with the hinge may be locked open sufficiently to permit the air to pass through the opening, said hinge preventing the door from opening or closing by the wind.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge having pawl and ratchet members for locking the door, gate or window blind at any point desired within the swinging movement of the same, or to lock the door, gate or blind closed.
It is also sometimes found very desirable to hold a door or gate open sufficiently to permit smaller animals to have free passage through the door or gateway, and with the ordinary hinge it is necessary to put a door stop or weight of some kind against the door to hold it open. This has been found very annoying and troublesome, and does not hold the door or gate from movement in but one direction.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to overcome the defects referred to in ordinary hinges.
These and other advantages and objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hinge made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a lan view of one of the leaves of the hinge. *ig. 4 is a similar view of the other leaf. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the leaf shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates one leaf of the hinge, and 2 is the other leaf. The leaf 1 is provided with a centrally disposed pintle bearing 3, the upper edge of which is enlarged and provided with a series of ratchet teeth 4, and near the bottom of the pintle bearing upon the leaf portion of the hinge is a pivoted pawl 5, said leaf being provided with the usual screw holes 6 for the attaching screws 7. The member 2 of the hinge consists of the leaf. 8 having an upper tubular pintle bearing 9 to which is attached a pivoted pawl 10, designed to engage the teeth 4 of the ratchet member on the pintle bearing 3 of the leaf 1. The lower pintle bearing 11 is provided with ratchet teeth 12 on its upper edge designed to be engaged by the pawl 5 on the leaf 1. The member 2 is secured to the door or gate frame by means of screws 13 in the usual manner, and a pintle 14 extends down through the bearings 9, 3, and 11, when the two members of the hinge are brought together. A door or gate provided with one such hinge as I have described, while the other hinge may be of the usual or any suitable construction, may be locked open at any desired point by raising the pawl 5 out of engagement with the teeth 12, and raising the pawl 10 out of engagement with the teeth 4, and after the gate has been opened the desired distance, dropping the pawls onto the teeth, thus holding the door from movement in either direction. WVhen it is desired to hold the door or gate closed and locked, the two pawls 5 and 10 are dropped into engagement with the teeth 4 and 12, and the gate is held closed until the pawls are disengaged from the teeth.
From the foregoing it 'will be obvious that a hinge made in accordance with my invention is of comparatively simple construction and will operate efficiently for holding a door or gate at any desired position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: 1. A hinge comprising a leaf having a central pintle bearing, ratchet teeth on the upper edge of said bearing, and a pivoted pawl near the lower end of said bearing, and the other hinge member provided with an upper pintle bearing having a pawl pivoted thereto and a lower pintle bearing having ratchet teeth at its upper edge, and a pintle for holding said In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature pintle bearings in alinemientl with the pawls in presence of two Witnesses. in positions to en a e Wit 1 t 1e ratchet teeth.
