LOCKING DEVICE FOR HINGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14,1907.
Application filed February 15, 1907. Serial No. 357,483-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH GEBHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looking devices for hinges, and has for its ob ject to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device which may readily be attached to the window frame for holding the shutter in the open position.
The invention consists of the new and novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure 1.
is a view of a portion of the window frame and shutter, the latter being in the open position, and showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the metal plate. Fig. 3 is an end view of the latch. Fig. 4 is a front view of the latch.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference designate like parts, 1 designates the window-frame 2 the shutter; and 3 the hinge upon which the shutter operates. I
The fastener consists of a metal plate 4 cut away at the top and bottom on its inner end at 5, 5, to fit over the inner end of the hinge, as seen in Fig. 1, and is secured in position by a screw 6 passing through a hole in-the inner end of the plate and into the window-frame. The lower edge of the plate 4 rests on the upper edge of the inner half of the hinge 3 with one of the lugs 7 projecting behind the said hinge. The plate 4 is provided with two of" the said lugs 7 ,cast integral therewith and projecting beyond the top and bottom edges and flush with the back of the plate. At the front end of the said plate 4 is an opening 8, the purpose of which will hereinafter more fully appear. An approximately T-shaped latch 9 is pivoted to the plate 4 at 10, and is provided with a laterally projecting lug 11 by means of which the latch is lifted, and a cross-head 12 at its outer end, the extremities of said cross-head 12 being beveled at 13, whereby when the shutter is opened the half of the hinge attached thereto will strike against the lower beveledend 13 and raise the latch 9 and allow the latter to ride over said hinge until the shutter is fully opened when the end of the latch will drop in front of the hinge beyond the pintle point and lock the shutter in the open position, as seen in Fig. 1. The latch 9 is also provided with a lug 14 projecting through the opening 8 and having a cross-piece 15 projecting parallel with the cross-head 12. This cross-piece 15 lies close to the back'of the plate 4 and serves to keep the latch 9 in its proper relative position and prevent it from being forced from its pivot when the shutter is locked in the open position.
The latch 9 is secured to the plate 4 by first placing the cross-piece 15 longitudinally through the opening 8 and then turning it to the vertical position, the rear end of the latch is then riveted to the plate. The opening 8 is not large enough vertically to permit the cross-piece 15 to pull out, but is just large enough to allow the lug 14 to work up and down therein. 1
It will be seen that the plate 4 and the latch 9 are so constructed as to permit of the device being reversed in order that it may be used on either side of the window-frame.
The plate 4 is secured to the window frame just above the hinge, as seen in Fig. 1.. When the shutter is opened the half of the hinge secured. thereto will strike the lower end of the latch raising the latter and allowing it to drop in front of the hinge when the shutter is fully opened and lock the shutter in this position. When it is desired to close the shutter the latch 9 is raised until the hinge thereon passes the lower end of the latch.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a locking device for hinges comprising a metal plate having lugs projecting from the top and bottom edges, and a latch pivoted at one end to the side of said plate.
2. As an article of manufacture, a locking device for hinges comprising a metal plate cut away on its inner end at the top and bottom to fit the upper inner edge of the hinge, and a latch pivoted atone end to the side of said plate.
3. As an article of manufacture, a locking device for hinges comprising a'metal plate cut away on its inner end at the top and bottom to fit the upper inner edge of the hinge, and a latch pivoted to said plate and provided With a cross-head on its free end.
4. As an article of manufacture, a locking device for hinges comprising a metal plate having lugs projecting from its upper and lower edges, and a latch pivoted to said plate and having acrosshead on its free end.
5. As an article of manufacture, a locking device for hinges comprising a metal plate having an opening in its outer end, and a latch pivoted to said plate and having a cross-head on its outer end and a lug near the outer end projecting through said opening.
6. As an article of manufacture, a locking device for hinges comprising a metal plate cut away on its inner end at the top and hottom, lugs projecting from the upper and lower edges of said plate, and an opening in the front end of said plate, and :1 lat (:h {w oted to the said plate and having a cross-head on its outer end, a lug projecting through said opening and provided with a eross-pieee thereon.
In testimony whereof I allix inv signatnre. in presence of two witnesses. I
