Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ELI LAPORT, of the village of I-Ioosick Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I hereby declare that the following description, in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, constitutes such a clear and accurate specication thereof as will enable others to construct and operate the same.
The invention relates to means for effectually closing doors, blinds and like structures and for holding them closely shut after closure.
A. common device which has heretofore been somewhat extensively used for such purposes is a pivoted elbow lever or bellcrank which is controlled in some of its movements by a retractile spring, and these bell-cranks have been variously hung and operated. Usually, the bell-crank has been a substantially integral or rigid device of which both arms held a fixed relation to each other, but this invention differs from such in having the arms of the bell crank separately hinged and so connected that one may have a limited movement independent of the other for purposes to be explained. Each of the arms is pivotally mounted on a stationary pintle so that each bearing is entirely independent of the other. By this arrangement the two arms need not be coaxially arranged but one may be pivoted eccentrically to the other. rIhe mode of con* structing my hinge joints also presents novel features.
'Ihe invention is fully disclosed in the drawings wherein in Figure l I have shown a side elevation of my invention as applied to an ordinary door casing. In Fig. 2 I have shown a horizontal plan of the saine. Fig'. 3 illustrates details of the hinge bracket. Fig. 4; shows details of the presser arm. Fig. 5 shows details of the trigger arm.
My apparatus is mounted on a metal bracket II which is attached to the face casing of the door frame as shown at F, Fig. l. The door G is shown in horizontal section in Fig. 2 as closed. The projecting arm of the bracket H is formed substantially as seen in Fig. 3, that is to say, from one side of the end is the semi-circular` projection c, and two pintles 71 and j, project from opposite sides of the bracket upon which are hinged the presser and trigger arms respectively.
These pintles are concentric with the proj ection le, so that the shoulders of the arms can turn around them. The presser arm L, has a depending shoulder w, Fig. 4C, and the trigger arm O, has a similar shoulder g, which when in working position strike against the beveled end a, of the bracket as shown in Fig. 3. The presser arm is of a curved or sickle form and its outer end terminates in a forked clamp which embraces and holds the pad R. rlhis pad may be of any yielding material like rubber or leather', the latter is preferred, which will not mar the surface of the door where it contacts with it in use. The inner end of said presser arm is bored as at l, to fit the pintle it, of the bracket. and in assembling the parts this is slipped over the pintle and held in position by the washer a, `and the binding screw P which screws into a threaded hole t', in the top of the pintle It. By tightening or loosening thisscrew the desired amount of friction in the joint may be determined, a feature which under some circumstances is of some importance.
From a stationary stud t, on the bracket a coiled retractile spring S, extends to and connects with a stud a, on the presser arm as seen in Fig. 2, and the parts are so constructed and arranged that when the presser arm is swung outwardly to the limit of its throw, or to where the shoulder fw, irnpinges against the bevel ze, of the bracket, the spring will be carried across the hinge center or past dead center so that the contraction of the spring will hold the presser arm open or in position where a swing of the door will freely pass it. 'Ihe trigger arm O, has a hinge cheek a, bored as at p, for the pintle j, and when in position is held by the screw Q, and washer o, as seen in Fig. l. The heel of this arm `is bored as at r, for the passage of the screw N, which passes through it and screws into the arm L, as in Fig. l. The opening 1", is elongated so as to allow the two arms L and O, to move slightly upon each other. The arm L has a facet m, Fig. 4, which bears against the surface of the arm 0, when the parts are assembled, and the object of this screw connection is to provide means for limiting the movement between the members L, and O. The object of this arrangement is to mitigate the shock and the momentum set up by the sudden slamming or closure of a door when it strikes the trigger arm which would ordinarily throw the presser arm around against the surface of the' door and tend to deface it or to close it too violently if the levers L and O were rigidly coupled.
It will be seen that by constructing the bracket with the stationary pivot studs 7L, and y', and hinging the arms thereon all shafting can be dispensed with and the arms may be moved thereon relatively to each other. The shoulder stops w, g, and 0a, afford simple means for limiting the outthrow of the arms.
The device operates as follows: Assuming that the screw Q is set up so that the friction in that joint is greater than that eXisting between the two surfaces held in contact by the screw N, and that the door is closed and the armsin `the position seen in dotted lines as in Fig. 2, if the door be then opened its swing'will carry the clamp and pad It, from the position shown Vat C, outwardly until the door will force the arm around until the stud a, is past dead center when the spring S, by its contraction will pull it around until the shoulder w, strikes the end end of the slot r, and engage the arm L, vso
as to move it. It will be noticed in this connection that the stress of spring S, will hold the arm L, against the bracket until the screw N, does traverse the length of the slot r; From this p'oint further swing of the door' will force the trigger arm around until it drags the arm L around until stud ln, has passed dead center, when the contraction of spring S, will pull the presser arm aroundnntil the pad R engages the door, upon doing which the spring will effect its perfect closure by forcing the presser arm against it until it engages the door stop in the jamb of the casing. After this the stress of the spring holds the door ineontact with the j amb stop whether it be otherwise fastened or not.
I therefore claim as my invention and delsire to secure by Letters Patent the follow- 111g? Vl. The combination in a door check, of a bracket for attachment to the door frame and having pivot studs integral with its upper andlower face, an independent trigger arm pivotally connected to the lower pivot stud, an independent closing arm pivotally connected to the stationary upper pivot stud of said bracket, coupling mechanism between said arms which permit slight play between its engaging parts,and actuating means for the closing arm, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the trigger arm and the closer arm, of a bracket having fixed pivot studs upon which said arms are pivotall mounted cou )line mechanism conneeting` said arms and constructed to permit slight play of one arm upon the other, actuating means connecting said bracket with the closer arm to rotate it in its normal eircuit of operative movement, said bracket being provided with a stop to limit the outthrow of said arms, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a trigger arm and a presser arm, a common but stationary axis of rotation on which said arms are arranged to rotate, coupling means comprising engaging parts located between said arms, said means being constructed and arranged to have a contact interval between their engaging parts, and actuating means including a spring for the presser arm, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a trigger arm and a presser arm, a common but stationary axis of rotation on which said arms are adapted to rotate, means for maintaining permanent frictional contact between said arms, actu ating means connected to said bracket and presser'arm, and coupling means located between said arms and having cooperating engaging parts with a contact interval therebetween, substantially as specified.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bracket, trigger and presser arms, and means for maintaining coupled engagement between said arms, of an actuating spring connecting the closer arm with the bracket, the bracket having` a back stop for limiting the outthrow of the presser arm and arranged to operate substantially in the manner described and for the purposes set fort-h.
G. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, trigger and presser arm pivotally mounted thereon, a coupling between the arms, actuating mechanism for the presser arm, and means including a slot and pin connection whereby one of the arms may move independently of the other for a limited dist-ance.
