To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Orr-1o M.OTTE, acitizen of the United ldtates, residing at the city of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concealed Fairing-Hinges, oi: which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
T he invention relates to hinges for doors and similar constructions; and the object of the improvement is to provide a simple and durable construction of concealed spring hinge for doors for cupboards and similar constructions wherein it is desirable that of the cupboard shall be entirely without a breaker projecting portion so that the design of said exterior may not be interrupted, the concealed hinge also pro viding a greater freedom oi: articulation tor the door so that it swings back out of? the way, and the spring aids in the control of the door; and the invention consists in the combinations and novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a ifront elevation of a door with the hingesconcealed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view at line 2-42 in Fig. 1 showing the construction and arrangement of thedoor and the hinge in the closed position; and 3 is a perspective view the hinge and portions of the door and cabinet with the door in the closed position, parts of the door and adjacent portion oi: the cabinet construction beingbroken away to reveal theposition ot the hinge when attached to the door and cabinet in the close position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of: the portion of the cabinet with the hinge in the open position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view at line 2--2 in Fig. 1, much the same as shown in Fig. 2 of the door and adjacent cabinet portion with the hinge in the closed position, the parts being enlarged toshow the construction and arrangement of the same; and Fig. 6 is a similar view with the door in the partially open position; and Fig. 7 is a similar sectional view with the door in the open position. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the cabinet with the hinge attached therein. in the open position, a portion of the cabinet being broken away and shown in dotted outline. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the cabinet showing the opening for the hinge. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the preferred term at spring tor opening the Specification of Letters Patent.

perspective parts of the hinge septhe details hinge and door. Fig. 11 is a view. of. the di'llerent arated from one another to show of their construction.
Like characters of reference rel'er to corresponding partsin the several views.
it he numeral 10 designates the cabinet and the numeral 11 the door, which parts are shown as made of sheet metal, though other materials might be used. No hinges tor the dooror other means of support appear in the front view of theclosed door as shown in 1.
The cabinet 10 is made preferably with an inturned flange 12 which is angular in formation and extends around the door to form the seat or stop 13 for the door 11, thereby also providing the pillars 14;- each side of said door 11 l-"in opening 15. is provided in the flange 12 through which the hinge operates.
l he hinge consists oi the strap or attaching plate 16 which is provided with spaced pivoting lugs or knuckles .16, as is common in strap or butt hinges. A link plate 17 is hinged to the attaching plate 16 by means or the pin 18, said link plate 17 being provided with spaced pivoting lugs or knuckles 17 which it into the attaching plate 16 so as to form a strong hinge joint therewith. llhelinkplate 1"! is made in the angular or curved form as shown so that when the door is open said link plate passes out through the opening and acts as a stop for said door holding it from striking against the side of: the cabinet by striking the side of the opening 15.
The opposite vertical edge of the link plate 17 has a pivoting lug or knuckle 22 thereon tor a hinge jointwith the attaching plate 19 which attaches to the door 11 by means of the pin 20, the plate 19 having the spaced lugs 21 for receiving the lug 22 there between.
. In order to limit the action of the hinge part, a lug 23 is provided on plate 19 which extends over the link plate 1'? and an an gular bend 2 is provided in the link plate- 17 which engages the end ofthe lug 23 thereby forming a stop for the hinge parts which limits the action of the same so that in qthe closed 13051 51011 the parts are braced firnilyagainst one another and all the parts of the hinge are held in correct relation.
in order to assist in the operation at the concealed hinge, a spring Q5 is provided.
to the inner exert a strong spring The wall of the cabinet by means of a welded attaching plate 28 which holds said bend firmly in position yet permitting the torsional turning of the reof the spring 25. The other end e closed mally held on a torsional strain so as to pressure in aiding in the opening of the door 11. As shown in Fig. 5,,the two loops 26 and 27 are twisted nearly into ahnement when the door is in position. .As these loops begin to open out, as showniin Fig. 6, they exert a torsional spring action on the door, and .when the door is in the op shown in Fig. 7, nearly back to the non-torsional position.
t is apparent that the hinge can be at tached to the inner side of and will extend out or thread through the the door 11.
as the weight of the door necessitates and that said hinges will be entirely concealed from view when in the closed posiion.
I claim as new In a door hinge, of U shapedcross-section having a door seat elxtending outwardly from the tie side of stantially U sh inner end of said ment to th thereof pivoted to end shaped leaf being movable throughsaid slot and engageable with said stop of the seat, said U-shaped leaf having a shoulder formed in one side thereof, and a lug extending outdoor plate and engageable door hinge, a sheet metal frame of cross-section having a door seat of the U- a stop at the inner side of the seat, a plate rigidly secured to the inner face of the outer side of said U-shaped frame, a leaf of sub stantially U-shape pivoted at one end to the inner end of said plate, a plate for attaeh ment to the back of the door having an end thereof pivoted to the opposite end of said U-shaped leaf, said opposite end of the U- shaped leaf being movable through said slot and engageable with said stop of the seat, a spring secured to the inner face of the outer side of the U-frame and having a loop engaging said side of the U-frame, and a second loop interposed between the first named plate and the adjacent side of the -leaf.
3. In a door hinge, a sheet metal of shaped crosssection seat extending outwardly side of the frame, said seat being slotted to form a stop at the inner side of plate rigidly secured to the inner face of the outer side of said U-shaped frame, a leaf of substantially U-shape pivoted at one end to the inner end of said plate, and a plate for attachment to the back of the door having an end thereof pivoted to the Opposite end of said U-leaf, said opposite end of the -shaped leaf being movable through said slotand engageable with said stop of the seat.
4:. In a hinge, a pair a curved leaf pivoted parts, said leaf having a shoulder formed on the outer face of one side thereof spaced from the pivotal point, and a stop borne by the adjacent attaching part and extending across said pivotal point and engageable said shoulder to hold said last named attaching part at substantially an obtuse angle to the adjacent side of the curved leaf in closed position of the parts.
5. In a hinge, a pair of attaching parts, a curved sheet metal leaf pivoted at its ends to said parts and formed with an angular bend between its ends, a lug connected at one end to the adjacent attaching part and extending across the pivotal point be tween said last named attaching part and said pivotal frame having a door from the inner of attaching parts, at its ends to said OTHO M. OTTE.
