Description
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
F. W. BROOKSIEPER AND J. B. SARGENT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO JOS. B. SARGENT AFORESAID.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,238, dated May 11, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK IV. BROCKSIEPER and JOSEPH B. SERGENT, both of New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in SasliFasteners; and we hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construcl tion and operation thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is the same inverted, with the bottom plate taken off in order to show its interior construction and operation. Fig. 3 is a part of the fastener showing the application of a spiral Spring E which may be used instead of the flat spring E in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Fig. l, A is the main case which is fasw tened by screws to the bottom of the upper window sash in the usual manner. C is the striking-plate or catch which is fastened in the usual manner to the top of the lower sash and exactly in front of A. B is the bar, which turns on the pivot P, and is made with a hook at the outer end to hook over the turned-up edge of the striking plate or catch C in the usual manner. D is a bolt,
which by its own weight, or by the force of the spring E is forced down and catches into the hole F. G isthe front of the case.
H in Fig. 2 is a projection on the inside of the back of the case; G in Fig. 2 is the front of the case; I is a bent spring that operates and holds the bar.
By an examination of the drawings, (or of the model which is sent herewith), it will be readily seen that the case A, and the striking plate or catch C, being fastened to the window in the usual manner, as described above, and the bar B, being turned at right angles with the case A, the bolt D is brought over the hole F, and by means of its own weight or by the spring E, is forced into the hole F, holding the bar B firmly, and preventing it from being forced around to a position parallel with the case C, by means of a caseknife or other similar instrument, inserted up between the sashes by Ipersons outside; as can readily be done to all similar sash fasteners heretofore invented, they not having the bolt D and hole F.
The advantage of the bolt attachment D, is obvious, rendering the fastener proof against burglars unless the glass is broken, as no instrument can be introduced from the outside, between the sashes that will at the same time lift the bolt D, and force the Vbar B, around to allow the sash to open.
le claim as our invention, and desire to obtain Letters Patent therefor- The bolt D, as an attachment to a sash fastener, operating substantially in the manner as described.
F. W. BROOKSIEPER. J. B. SARGENT.
