The object of the present invention is to provide an auxiliary lock for doors and the like which is designed, more particularly, to reinforce and strengthen the ordinary locks now in commercial use and prevent the use of master keys from a point exterior the door, and also resist the prying apart of the bolt keeper and the bolt casing. Further objects will be hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawings, 1 illustrates the bolt easing of a lock and 2 the bolt keeper, the casing being attached to a door 3 and the keeper to a door jan'ib 4 by any suitable means, as by the screws 5. The construction 0! the bolt throwing mechanism terms no part of the present invention and is not shown in detail, except that an oval thumbpiece 6 is shown, the thumb-piece leading to the bolt operating mechanism for throwing the bolt into and out of the keeper 2.

ing a serrated face section a, the two being held in mutual engagement by a short bolt engaged by a nut 9. Screw 7 passes through keeper 2 into the door jamb 4 and, intermediate the head 7 of the screw and the latching arnnniay abut a sleeve 7 on the screw.
7 Rel to Figures 2 and 3 it will be seen that one section of the latching arm is formed with a longitudinal slot 5 to enable adjustment. At the right hand end the latching arm is formed with any suitable means to en gage the thumlnpiece 6. In the present instance such means comprises side flanges 11 and a top flange 12 for fitting over-the thumbpfece rearwardly thereof. Fixed upon the bolt keeper 2 is a spring catch 13 which lies 4 over the upper edge of the latching arm and prevents a thin instrument from being inserted from the front of the door and employed to raise the latching arm. W hen it it desired to raise the latch ng arm, a slight pressure upon the spring catch will enable the swinging of the arm upwardly to release the lock handle or thumb-piece 6,
If desired, a chain holder i l, l igi'ire 2, may be placed on screw 7, the chain leading to a ring 15 having one section of a size to slip over the thumb-piece 6 and a smaller upper section to fit the rounded shank of the thumb-piece. Or, if desired, tie chain may be formed as in Figure l wherein the ring 15* has at its end a fiat disk 16 to fit within an opening of the same size in the thun'ib-picce such as that shown at 1.7, Fig ures and 10. By moving the disk downwardly into the lower portion oi? a channel con-imunieating with said opening 1'7, the chain is securely held by the overhanging walls of the channel which are spaced a d tance only equivalent to the shank 16* rearwardly of the disk 16.
In Figures 5 and 6 the latching arm 19 is sectional in the preceding figures and the bolt which engages the two sections is also employed as a pivoting member for securing the latching arm to the bolt casing 1. The left hand end of the latching arm is formed as a hook to engage a-headed stud 20 secured to the bolt keeper 2. In the form shown in Figure a spring catch 23 is employed below the swinging arm to serve in the same manner as the spring catch 13 of Figures 1 and 2.
The device illustrated in Figures 7, 8 and 9 is substantially similar to that shown in Figures 5 and 6 with the exception that the latching arm Q-t is termed in one piece and is provided with means for engaging the serrated or toothed edge of a round thumb-piece The arm is pivotally mounted at 26, is normally engaged by a spring catch 2'? and its free end is adapted to ei'igage a headed stud 28 carried by the bolt keeper 29 At its right hand end latching arm 24: formed with a lateral apertured projection 80, the aperture being substantially the diameterot'thetoothed thumb-piece 25, and its walls being preferably toothed as at 31 to engage the tooth of the thumb-piece for holding the latter against rotation from a point exterior the door, as by a master key.
In Figures 11 and 12 I have shown means connected directly to the bolt of the lock whereby the bolt may be latched by means independent of its normal actuating means. The bolt casing 32 is formed in its tron-t wall with a slot 33 through which projects a post 34 connected to the bolt 35. Pivotally mounted upon the reduced end of the post is a latching arm 36, it being held in place by a screw 37. The left hand end of latching arm 36 is hooked to enter an opening vertically formed in the receiving member 38, which member is secured to the bolt keeper 39 in any suitable manner. A spring catch 40 may be secured to the bolt casing upon latching arm 36, it serving the same function as the spring catch 13 illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 and previously described. In the operation of the said device, thrmving ot the bolt 23?) into the keeper 39 by means of the thumb-piece 41 will move post to the lei-t suilicientl y to enable latching arm 36 to be swung into pmiti on to engage the receiving member 38 and spring catch 40 will spring over the upper edge of the latching arm to prevent upward move ment except when the catch is pressed back- Wardly.

In combination a lock casing, bolt mechanism including a bolt carried by said casing, a bolt keeper adapted to be secured to the jainb of a door, and a swinging arm adapted to be thrown into action to simultaneously ensaid belt mechanism and said keeper to hold the bolt against movement and hold the bolt casing and keeper together, as and for the purpose described.
3. A device constructed in accordance with claim 2 in which the arm is sectional and adjnstable.
4. A device constructed in accordance with claim 2 in which the arm is formed at one end with means for engaging a bolt throwing thumb-piece to hold the, latter against rotation, the oppos te end oi the arm being adapt ed for securing. to the bolt keeper.
5. It device constructed in accordance with claim 2 in combination with spring means for holding the arm in disengaged position.
6. Auxiliary locking means for door locks, a bolt throwing mechanism including a sl et't having a thun ib-piece and the like comprisin a latching arnn means for pivotally supporting the arm and tor-securing it to the jamb oi a door, and means carried by the arm adapted to engage the bolt throwing tluunbpiece to prevent movement of the latter.
