y One of the principal and outstanding objects of the present invention is to provide a door latch which is so constructed as to eliminate the expensive mortisingoperation which is ordinarily required in associating the latch with a door.
The invention further -comprehends a latch mechanism which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easily applied to the door, and
` which is ighly efficient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in View, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawingsin which there is exhibited one example or ernbodiment of the invention while the appended claims define the actual scope of the f invention.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the improved latch applied to a door stile and illustrating the latch bolt in its normal projected position;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view illustrating the manner 'in which the latch bolt is locked in its projected position against retraction;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view of the door stile prior to the application of the latch thereto;

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates thev stile of a door or other swinging closure. The latch constituting the present invention includes generally the latch bolt assemblage designated enerally by the reference character B and the latch bolt actuating means designated generally by the reference character C. The
latch bolt assemblageB includes abolt com-` prising a circular shank 10, having an enlarged head 11 at one end, which denes a shoulder 12 at its juncture Vwith the shank. The latch bolt assemblage further includes a easing in the nature of a circular sleeve 13 carried by a platelll, which sleeve is formed at its juncture with the plate with a substantially squared portion 15, within which the head 1l of the bolt is adapted to be retracted and from which the same is designed to be partially projected so that the head may engage with a suitable form of keeper (not shown) in a door frame or thelike. Adjacent its rear or inner end, the sleeve or casing 13 is provided with diametrically disposed upper and lower slots 16 and 17, portions of the material from the slots being bent inwardly at 18 to define spring seats. A. coiled expansion spring 19 surrounds the bolt shank 10 and has its opposite ends bearing respectively against the spring seats 18 and the shoulder 12 so as to function to normally project the bolt head beyond the outer I-surface of the' plate 14. The bolt shank 10 adjacent its rear end is provided with a slot 20 for a purpose to be hereafter set forth. Under this construction and arrangement of the latch bolt assemblage B, itis obvious that the same may be associated with the door stile A or other swinging closure by boring a hole D inwardly from the outer free edge of the stile and forming the outer end of the hole with a squared portion E, while the outer edge of the stile is mortised out at Fi? merely to a depth equal to the thickness of the plate 14. y
The latch bolt actuating means C includes a spindle 25 preferably of square or non-circular formation, upon which a circular collar 26 is arranged for turning movement with 90 the spindle. The ndoor stile A is formed with 1 a transverse circular borel Gr, which communicates with the hole D adjacent its inner end, which bore G constitutes a bearing for the 'collar 26. The opposite ends of the 95 spindle 25 extend through escutcheons 27 and 28- secured to the opposite side facesl of the lstile A and the portions of the spindle which project beyond the escutcheons have attachedthereto knobs 29. In assembling the latch with the door stile, the bolt sleeve 13 with the latch bolt in a normal position isfinserted in the hole D until the inner slotted end 16 is disposed approximately in alinement with the actuator pin 30,
which is turned forwardly at a forty-ve degree angle. The spindle and sleeve 26 are then turned until the pin engages in the slot 20. The plate 14 yis then shoved home until it lies within the mortise F, and screws orother fastening devices I are employed for securing the latch'bolt assemblage in place. lt'iis thus obvious that by turning the knob in one direction, the actuator pin engaging in the slot 20, will eliect a retraction of the bolt against the action of the spring 19, while release of the knobs will permit thegspring to function to project the latchbolt head 11.
ln order to'lock the bolt. against retraction, a locking pin 31 is -insertable through an opening 32 extending through the inner portion of rocation of the bolt its actuating means.

A bolt guide member adapted to be inf serted ina bore `extending inwardly from the edge of a door stile, a bolt in the guide and a rotatable bolt operating member adapted to be accommodated in a transverse bore intersecting the irst` mentioned bore, the operating member including means engageable with 4the bolt or uncoupling it from the bolt by a rotary movement of said member onlyvwhen the bolt casing is in a predetermined position.
