To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. BENNETT, citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Geneva, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window sash locks and has particular reference to that class of interlocking devices adapted to be applied to the meeting rails of sliding sashes.
The chief objects of the improvements which form the subject matter of this ap plication are, to provide a simple and efficient device that will prevent the window from being opened while the cooperating members of the lock are in engaged position; to furnish a locking movement that will tend to urge the adjacent sash rails to which the lock is attached into closer relation, and to produce a device of this type that will resist all efforts to slide the sashes or release the interlocking members from the outer side of the window.
Further objects of this invention are to furnish a sash fastener in which the interlocking parts can be easily and quickly engaged and released when operated in the proper manner; to provide a mechanical construction that will resist all efforts to disconnect the interlocked members when the releasing eifort is applied to any part except that designed for the purpose; and to furnish a mechanism having few parts of simple form, thus rendering the article inexpensive to manufacture and strong and durable in use.
A very important feature of the invention is the provision of retaining spurs or projections which facilitate the attachment of the lock members and tend to maintain them in operative position.
I accomplish the desired results by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, the details of construction being disclosed in the following views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete device applied to sash rails with the cooperating members interlocked; Fig. 2 is a side elevation with portions broken away to disclose the detent mechanism; Fig.8 is a Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the details of the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates a bracket or housing comprising parallel side walls 11 connected at the rear by a bridge wall 12, and having a rearwardly projecting attaching or base plate 13, pierced by a screw hole 14, for an attaching screw 15. Near the front margin each wallll is furnished upon its lower edge with a spur 16. These spurs are designed to be forced into the sash 17 near the front edge and assist the screw 15 to retain the housing in place, so that only one screw will be required for the base. Be tween the walls 11 are pivotally mounted two cooperating members comprising a latch 18 and a latch operating lever 19. The latch is in the form of a plate having a hole 20 for the pivot pin 21, fixed in the side walls 11, and a beak or hook 22, which is adapted to pass through the opening 23 ofa keeper 2 1 furnished with a foot plate 25, secured to the meeting rail 26 of the upper sash by a suitable screw 27 This keeper is furnished with spurs 16, which are like those on the bracket 10, and penetrate the upper sash rail in the same manner. The said latch lever 19 is also in the form of a plate and is furnished with an oval slot 28 through which the pin 21 passes, and has a rearwardly projecting thumb plate 29. The lower and rear margin of the lever is suitably curved and formed with ratchet teeth 30, which are adapted to engage the upper edge 31 of the housing bridge wall 12. When the said lever is in the position shown in Figs.
I 3 and 5, the slot 28 permits the plate to rise so that the teeth will clear the edge 31 when the said lever is operated by means of its thumb plate 29. The latch 18 has a flange 32, which projects above the upper edge of the lever 19. When the plate19is at its lowest position, there will be an angular space between the flange and the lever,'but when the latter is lifted to the limit of its vertical median section of the bracket with l slot 28, the edge of the lever will engage the flange, and if the lever is then lifted, it will carry the latch with it because of this engagement.
A similar interlocking is obtained by the modification shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. In this case the flange 32 is omitted and the latch 18 provided with a notch 33 in its front margin which is engaged by a suitable lug 34: on the adjacent side of the latch lever. This lug by engaging the notch 33 will cause the two plates to move together, its action being similar to that of the flange 82 and edge of the lever.
lVhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, a lifting force applied to the thumb plate 29 will lift the lever until the teeth 30 are free from the edge 31 of the wall 12 and as the upper edge of the said lever comes in contact with the flange 32, it will cause the latch 18 to rock on the pivot 21 until the hook 252 is depressed sufficiently to clear the keeper 24. If now the elevated handle 29 is depressed by gravity the rearwardly inclined ratchet teeth will ride fully over the edge of the wall 12 and the front upper corner of the lever will strike the flange at the point a and carry the hook to its locking position.
The manner of attaching the device will be readily understood. The member 10 is fixed in the usual position upon the upper side of the meeting rail of the lower sash, the prongs or points 16 being forced into the rail and the fixture made secure by the screw 15. The keeper 24: is then placed in proper relation with the member 10 and fastened to the rail 26 in the same manner. To look the sashes it is only necessary to depress the thumb plate and bring the hook 22 into engagement with the transverse portion of the keeper in the manner shown, the inclination of the engaging surfaces of the said hook and keeper causing the sashes to be drawn together and the parts 18 and 19 are automatically held in this position by the engagement of the ratchet 80 with the abutment formed by the wall margin 31, preventing any movement of the latch until upward pressure is made upon the thumb plate 29 of the latch lever as hereinbefore mentioned.
It will be understood that any downward pressure on the hook 22 will cause the corner a to strike against the adjacent edge of the flange of the plate and thus result in the thrust being directed against the lever so that its teeth will impinge upon the edge 31 and the greater this thrust the more effective will be the resulting engagement between teeth and flange.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. In a sash-lock, a keeper, a housing, a locking member pivotally mounted in the housing, a lever adapted to operate said locking member, ratchet-teeth on said lever and a fixed abutment 011 said housing adapted to be engaged by said ratchet-teeth.
2. In a sash-lock, a keeper, a housing, a locking member consisting of a plate pivotally mounted in said housing, a hook on said plate, a slotted and toothed lever mounted adjacent said plate, and engaging same, means on said housing for engaging said teeth and holding the lever against movcment in one direction.
8. In a sash-lock, a support, a pivot horizontally mounted in the support, a locking plate mounted on the pivot and having an upturned hook at one end, a slotted lever mounted on said pivot, means interlocking the lever and said plate, detent means integral with said housing cooperating with the lever to hold it against movement in one direction, and a keeper member having an opening adapted to be engaged by said hook.
4C. In a sash-lock, a bracket, a pivot in said bracket, a locking member on said pivot, an operating lever loosely mounted on the pin adjacent the locking member, means interlocking the lever and said member, a ratchet on said lever, an abutment on said bracket adapted to engage said ratchet, and a keeper adapted to be engaged by said locking member.
5. A sash locking device comprising a housing, a hooked plate pivotally mounted in said housing and having an integral projection, a toothed lever plate pivotally mounted in said housing and having a limited vertical movement, said lever plate arranged to be engaged by the projection on the hooked plate, and said housing having a portion adapted to be engaged by the teeth on the lever plate, and a keeper adapted to receive the hook of the hooked plate.
6. In a sash-lock, a housing adapted to be secured to a sash, a pin horizontally arranged in said housing, a hooked locking plate mounted on said pin and adapted to rock in a vertical plane, a slotted lever mounted on said pin, and adapted to rock in a vertical plane, said plate and lever having interengaging portions, and said housing and lever having interengaging portions whereby the rocking of the lever is limited, and a keeper adapted to be engaged by the hook-portion of said locking plate.
7. In a sash-lock, a housing adapted to be secured to a sash, a pin arranged in said housing, a hooked locking-plate mounted on said pin, and means for operating said plate, said means comprising a lever having a slot engaged by said pin, having teeth engaging said housing and having a thumb portion and said plate and lever having interengaging portions, in combination with a keeper for said locking-plate.
