I Y W W XXV s,
UNITED 1 STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. HAWKINSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED SASH LIFT AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,981, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed March 25,1901. Serial No; 52fl95. (No model.)
T0 0; whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HAWKIN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash Lift and Look; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-locks, and comprises a combined sash lift and lock adapted to operate simultaneously, so that the sash is unlocked in the act of raising the window.
It also comprises a sash-lock having a spring-catch, with means to prevent the catch being sprung or forced from Without the window.
,In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. 7 Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lifting device, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the lock detached with the lifting-lever and locking-screw removed.
The plate 5 is seated in a mortise in the inner side of the window-sash and is attached thereto by screws, with its face flush with the sash and its lower end flush with the bottom of the sash. Pivoted horizontally in a recess in the plate by pivot-pin 6 is a latch 6,- the head 7 of which extends below the edge of the sash and is adapted'when the sash is closed to enter and engage a socket-plate 11 in the sill. A flat spring 8 is attached to the back of the plate and bears against the latch and serves to press the same forward to engagement with the socket-plate.
The lifting device or lever, pivoted in ears 5 on the front of the plate 5, consists of a yoke-shaped finger-piece 10 and a horizontal cross piece or bar 9, extending in a groove or channel between the ears across the plate 5 and recess containing latch 6. That side of the bar 9 opposite the yoke or finger piece is flattened or cut out to form a depression 9 of a length sufficient to receive the latch 63, which is pressed forward by the spring 8 against the flattened face of the bar in the depression, serving to normally retain the finger-piece in substantially a horizontal position, as shown in the drawings. In this position the latch engages the socket. To disengage the latch and raise the window, the finger-piece 10 is brought up vertically, thus conveniently acting as a sash-lift, and the bar 9 is thereby turned, so that the latch will not pass into the depression, but is forced backward, disengaging the head 7 g from the socket 11. The mortise in the sash is shaped to allow the backward movement of the latch.
The latch is tapped from front to back toreceive a thumb-screw 12, which is adapted to lock the latch against release by being screwed in against the wood of the sash, or preferably against the head of an ordinary wood-screw 13 therein, as shown in Fig. 2. The fiat spring is perforated to allow the passage of the screw. In this position the latch is locked against backward movement; but the same may be permitted by withdrawing the thumb-screw a sufficient distance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined sash lift and look, a plate attached to the sash, a latch pivoted to the plate and adapted to engage a socket in the sill, a lifting-lever adapted to disengage the latch in the act of lifting the sash, and a screw to lock the latch to prevent its disen gagement from the socket.
2. Ina sash-lock, a plate attached to the sash, a latch pivoted to the plate and adapted to yieldingly engage a socket in the sill and a screw adapted to engage the latch and prevent its disengagement from thesocket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. I-IAWKINSON. Witnesses: I
GEO. E. TEW, E. M. STALEY.
