Description

J. M. WHITNEY.
SASH FASTENER.
No. 28,322. Patented May 16, 1860.
life (7- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH M. WHITNEY, OF ASTORIA, NEW YORK.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,322, dated May 15, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH M. WHITNEY, of Astoria, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section of my invention the line 00, 00, Fig. 1 indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a face view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawings.
A, represents the frame of a window in which the inner sash B, and the outer sash B slide up and down in the usual manner. Such windows can easily be opened from the outside, as well as from the inside, by pushing down the outer, or by raising the inner sash, and dishonest persons, in many cases take advantage of this fact to enter a house clandestinely. For this reason it is desirable to have some simple and reliable device which prevents persons opening the window from the outside, and various de vices have been proposed for this purpose, but such are more or less defective. In order to make such a device answer its purpose, it must be simple and cheap, and at the same time it must be strong enough to resist any power which may be applied to either sash in order to open the window, and it must also be so arranged that it is impossible to. push back the fastener by means of some instrument that may be entered between the two meeting bars of the inner and outer sash. Such is my device, which consists of a brace C, hinged to a plate a, that is screwed down firmly to the top of the meeting bar 6, of the inner sash. This brace catches into a notched plate D, that is fastened in a mortice in the side rail of the outer sash as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The notch C, in this plate is deep enough to admit the full thickness of the brace C, and the brace thus forms a strut, that prevents the inner sash being raised, or the outer sash being pushed down. In order to secure this strut in its position I have hinged to the plate a, a dog E, which, when turned up, catches under a nose d, that projects from the back of the brace C, and if thus secured the brace can not be pushed back from the outside by means of a knife or any other instrument that may be entered between the meeting bars of the inner and outer sash. This instrument I consider much simpler and quite as effective as a slide that may be employed to secure the brace or strut C, in its position. Such a slide is not only more difficult to make, but at the same time if it has been in use for a short time, it sticks and its operation becomes troublesome. The dog E, on the other hand can be turned up and down under all circumstances, and at all times with equal facility, and it secures the brace C, in such a manner that the window can not be opened from the outside without breaking some portion of the same.
My device can be made very cheap, all its parts being cast, and no fitting being required, and by a slight alteration it can be used for fastening doors as Well as windows.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture a window sash fastener composed of a plate a, hinged nose strut C, and hinged dog E, arranged as shown.
