STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. F. DROTT, OE CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
SHUTTER-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,728, dated October 11, 18-59.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. F. DROTT, of Cumberland, in the county of Alleghany and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Window-Shutters and other Similar Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a plate provided with a projection, and a spring provided with a projection, the two being secured to different sides or parts of the hinge, and catching together when the hinge is open for the purpose hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1, represents a perspective of one portion of the hinge. Fig. 2, is a perspective of the other side of the hinge. Fig. 3, is a top View of the two parts connected. Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the two parts connected. Fig. 5, represents the plate and the spring secured to the hinge, the hinge being open and held in that position by meansof them.
In the figures, A, and B, represent the two portions of a hinge, which may be constructed in any known way and of any suitable material.
C, and D, represent a portion of the window frame and shutter to which the parts of the hinge are attached.
Upon the back of one portion of this hinge a projection on is cast, beveled on one side and with a square shoulder on the other. This projection may be cast with the hinge or it may be formed upon a plate or strip a, as shown at m, and this strip or plate may be secured at the back of the hinge by means of a screw or otherwise.
E, represents a spring which is also provided with a projection 0, similar to the one upon the hinge having a square shoulder and a beveled side. This spring is secured at the back of the other side or portion of the hinge either by means of one of the screws which attach the hinge to the casing or by means of a separate screw.
03, represents a pin, provided with a head which passes through that portion of the hinge at the back of which the spring is secured for the purpose of operating said spring when necessary. The spring may be operated by means of this pin or it may be provided with a thumb piece a, by means of which it may be operated. When these two portions of the hinge so provided with a projection and arranged with the spring are secured to the window casing or frame and to the shutter; and are moved until they stand in line with each other, the projection upon the spring catches upon the projection upon the hinge, and the parts are held in this position, the shutter being open. WVhen it is desired to close the shutter, the spring may be pushed back by means of the pin (Z or by the thumb piece a, so that the two projections will separate. The shutter being then free may be easily closed.
This improvement may be used on any of the hinges now in use by employing the separate plate 12, as constructed in connection with the spring as constructed, the two being secured to different portions of the hinge oppositeeach other, so that the two projections will catch into each other when the shutter is opened.
The rear end of the spring E, is provided. with a slot through which the screw which holds it passes, in order to adjust the said spring to suit different sized hinges.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a plate provided with a projection, and a spring provided with a projection, the two being secured to different sides or parts of the hinge, and catching together when the hinge is open for the purpose hereinafter described.
The employment of the spring E, as constructed, when used in connection with the plate 42, as constructed, the two being used in combination with any common shutter hinge substantially as and for the purpose specified.
H. F. DROTT.
