Description

UNITEDl sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
AUGUSTUS REEVE, OF ALLO'WAYSTOVN, NEW JERSEY.
SHUTTER-BOLT.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 30,091, dated September 18, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS REEvE, of Allowaystown, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved ShuttenBolt; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my invention applied to a pair of shutters a?, 9c. Fig. 2 indicates the plane of section. Fig. 3, a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The obj ect of this invention is to obtain a bolt by which shutters may be securely fastened in both a closed and partially opened or bowed state. y
The invention consists in fitting the bolt within a case somewhat wider than the bolt so as to admit of the latterI having two movements, to wit, a longitudinal and a rising and falling one, the socket which receives the end of the bolt being constructed in a similar way and provided with an opening in its back plate which opening` forms the orifice of a supplemental socket to receive the bolt when the shutters are secured in a bowed state.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe. it.
A represents a metal plate with a case B, of rectangular form attached, in which case the bolt C, of similar form is fitted. The
bolt is narrower than its case B, so as to admit of the former being moved bodily up and down in the latter. The front of the case B, has a longitudinal slot a, in it, the lower edge of which is provided with two notches c, shown clearly in Fig. 2. To the bolt C there is attached a button D, the shank CZ' of which projects through the slot c.
The plate A, is secured to the inner side of one of'the shutters E in the usual way, and to the other shutter F, and at a point in line with the plate A, there is secured a plate Gr, which has a socket H, attached.
The socket H, is of course much shorter than the case B, but is of the same width, so as to admit of the rising and falling movement of the bolt and the lower part e, of the socket is much shorter than the upper plate in order to allow a lip f on the bolt to pass behind the plate e, when the former is moved down, see Fig. 2.
The plate G, of the socket H, has an opening g, in it, said op'enin being just in front of the socket and of su cient dimensions to allow the end of the bolt to pass through. This opening g, forms the orifice of a recess I, in the shutter F, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and this recess is a supplemental socket to receive the bolt C, when the shutters are bowed as shown in red Fig. 1.
lVhen the shutters are thus secured in a bowed or partially open state, the lip f, of
Vthe bolt is down behind the lower edge of the opening g, so as to prevent the forcing back or casual withdrawal of the bolt.
The bolt C, is moved by grasping the button D and the shank of the button when the shutters are secured in a closed state fits within the notch b, and when the shutters are secured in a bowed state the shank lits in the notch c. These notches also serve to prevent the casual withdrawal o-f the bolt.
In order to slide back the bolt from either of its two positions when the shutters are .locked the bolt is lifted bodily so that the shank of the button D, and the lip f, may be free respectively from t-he notch ZJ, or c, and the plate e, or lower edge of opening g, according to the position of the bolt.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The supplemental socket I, having a position relatively with the socket H, as shown in connection with the bolt C, provided with a lip f, and having a rising and falling or equivalent movementfor the purpose specified.
