Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HARTWIG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,225, dated April 80, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HARTWIG, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents the inside of the lock with the backplate removed, and Fig. II shows a section of the same at the line III IV.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the key bit in the inside of the lock, forming part of the same, in such a manner that said key bit, before being able to act upon the bolt, has to be lifted over a projection by the action of the key, which latter is connected to said key bit for the purpose of operating the lock at a point outside of the center of motion, both the key bit and the key turning loosely upon a key bolt.
In the accompanying drawing A represents the lock case and, B, the bolt constructed in the usual manner.
D is the key bolt.
E is a key bit turning loosely on the key bolt D when operated by the suitable key.
F is a projection fast to the lock case A preventing the key bit E to turn, except after the same is lifted over or upon said projection.
Gr is a' spring fast to the backplate, J, and acting upon the key bit E, so as to bring the same back again in its place.
The key (Fig. II) consists of a tube fitting upon the key bolt D. On the end of this tube a projection is made with a small nose.
When the key is inserted into the keyhole and put upon the key bolt, D, the projection together with its nose passes into a suitable hole, s, in the hub ofthe key bit E, but on one side of the center of motion of the key bit and of the key. By turning the key a little the same will act upon said key bit, and bring the nose on the end of the key into an inner recess in the hub of the key bit, when the same can be raised up so as to be brought over or upon the projection F, after which the further turning motion of the key will cause the key bit to act upon the bolt B so as to unlock the same.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the key bit E in a lock, turning loosely upon the key bolt D, when said key bit is combined with a projection or stop, F, fast on the lock case, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY I-IARTWIG.
