Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEI'oE.
EGBERT P. CARTER, OF CHINA, NEW' YORK.
WINDOW-SASH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,074,l dated January 8, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EGBERT P. CARTER, of China, in' the county of lVyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. o,
The nature of my invention consists in constructing and connecting the parts of the sash in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification A represents the window casing or frame, which may be made in any of the known ways-either adapted to the use of weights for balancing the windows or otherwise, as may be desired.
B B represent the sash, which may be made in the usual manner with the exception of one side of the sash frame. A representation of the construction of this side of the sash is seen in Fig. Instead of being made square on its edge, it is made beveled and irregular, as seen from w to Fig. 2.
C represents a strip which has one side formed to correspond with the edge of the sash, as seen from x to w', Fig. 2. These sides of the sash and strip which correspondare formed with rabbets which fit snugly together, making a tight joint.
The sash and strip are hinged together at top and bottom by plates or bars a a, as shown in Fig. 2.
A catch is represented on the sash which' holds the sash and strip together. When the two are secured snugly together in proper position for securing in the frame the sash presents the ordinary appearance of a square edged sash. When it is desired to put the sash in the frame or casing the catch is lo0sened so as to allow the strip C to fall back, as seen in Fig. 2. The sash is then adjusted on one side, and just as the other is passing in the strip C, is pushed forward and passes into the casing. The sash and strip are then secured together by the catch and the sash is fast in the casing. The sash is removed by. simplyl loosening the catch and sliding or moving back the strip C.
With this arrangement no side strips' are necessary for holding the sash, as is usually the case.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and ,desire to secure by Letters Patent is-' `The combination of the sash B, with the strip C, constructed as described, the two being hinged, or secured together, by the plates or bars a, a, and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
