Description

UNITED sTATENT ormoni LAFAYETT BARTOO, OF EAST AURORA, NE'W YORK.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,729, dated June 19, 1860.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LAFAYETT BAR'roo, of East Aurora, Erie county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved IVindow Stop and Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig. II is a cross section of the same on line @-6.
Like letters refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A is the window casing. B, B', are the window sash.
C, O are spring stops which hold the lower sash in the frame and guide it when being raised or lowered. These stops fit in grooves made in the jambs (D) and have coiled springs (E) placed behind them which press them out from the grooves sufficiently to hold and guide the window sash. The
ycross piece (e) at the top and the shoulders (6') in the sill at the bottom prevent them from being pressed out too far. By taking out the cross piece (e) the stops may be removed. The grooves in the jambs into which the stops fit are sufficiently deep to allow the stops to be pressed back entirely within them.
f is a catch projecting from stop (C) which catches into the series of holes (g) in the side of the lower sash (B) and holds it at any desired height, it being disengaged b v pressing the stop inward until the catch f is withdrawn allowing the sash to be raised or lowered.
71, is a similar catch projecting from the stop (O) which catches intothe series of holes (i) in the upper sash (B) and operating in the same manner as the stop O and catch f.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the spring stops C, C answer three distinct purposes: First, they answer the purpose of the ordinary stop, that of holding the sash in place and guiding the movement thereof; second, they allow the sash to be removed at pleasure without removing the stops, it being simply necessary to press the stops into the grooves made in the j ambs to receive them thus leaving the sash free to be removed, (this will be found very convenient in removing the window sash for cleaning;) third, they answer the purpose of fasteners preventing the windows from being opened from the outside and furnishing means to hold the window open at any desired height.
The spring stops O and C having the catches (f and it) for the combined purposes as specied.
LAFAYETT BARTOO.
