Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
JOHN WYBERD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FREDERIC S. LITTLEJOI-IN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MODE OF OPERATING SLATS OR BLINDS.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 32,920, dated July 28, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WYBERD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in the mode of securing and operating adjustable slats used in windows, doors, shutters, blinds, or other suitable places; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of the specification.
In order that the public may fully understand the nature of my invention, and those skilled in the imechanic arts be enabled to construct and operate the same, I will describe it as follows:
Figure l is a perspective drawing of a frame (A.) which is about the size of a window frame or that portion of the sash which receives the glass. This frame is made of fiat strips of metal the vertical sides ofwhich have my improvement attached which improvement consists in the use of simple levers (B. B. B. B.) which are provided with curved springs (c. 0. 0. c.) these springs being secured by means of loops (el. d. d. d.) which (loops) are a part of the levers (B. B. B. B.) and so arranged that the springs are held firmly at their centers while the ends thereof are left free to press the slats of wood, glass, metal, or other suitable substance, of any desired thickness firmly against the horizontal ianges f. f. thereby retaining the slats in their proper places the same being operated by means of eyelets; these eyelets also constitute a part of the lever plates (B. B. B. B.) as shown more clearly at letter (e.) Fig. 2. which is an enlarged perspective back view of lever (B.).
Letter Fig. l. is a strip of metal employed to operate the levers (B. B. B. B.)
which move freely upon their eyelet axes which serve in the' double capacity of securing the plates or levers (B. B. B. to the vertical sides (A) of the frame or sash, at the same time allowing the slats to be moved more'freely than by any other attachment, when operated by the power or strip which is also provided with a spiral spring (s) the upper end of which is fastened to the frame or sash and assists to support and operate the movable slats.
After having thus set forth the arrangement of the individual parts of my invention I will next proceed to point out the novelty thereof which consists in the application and use of the flat curved spring (c.) and loop ((Z,) the same forming a part of the lever plate and eyelet for the purpose of receiving and holding window or other slats employed for Ventilating purposes at any desired angle.
The superiority of the above arrangement over those that are in common use is that I am enabled to use any thickness of slats or different slats without disarranging the apparatus employed to hold the slats in their respective places, hence I believe the above to be new and useful.
Therefore what I claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- The curved springs (c. c. c. loops ((Z. fl.'
