To asZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OswALD KNIGHT, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter and Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that form of fasteners for shutters and doors known as barfasteners, and which consists, chiefly, of a bar and means for fastening it crosswise the shutter or door, or adjustingit to another position when the door is to be opened.
The object of my invention is to enable this class of fastener to be opened from the inside by the proprietor or employs of the building, and at the same time permit it, when occasion calls for it, to be opened from the outside, in case of fire, by a key in the posses sion of the fire department, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is an inside view,and Fig. 2 asection through line 2 2 of one form of my invention as applied to double shutter or doors, and Fig. 3 is an outside view, and Fig. 4 a section through line at 4 of my invention as applied to a single shutter or door.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, I use for double shutters or doors the ordinary centrally-pivoted bar A and two bar-staples B B fastened to the inside of the shutters'and pointing in opposite directions, so that the bar when adjusted to a vertical position about its central fulcrum permits the shutters to be opened, and when turned horizontally across the shutters locks them, so that they cannot be opened. This form of fastening,when applied to a stationary fulcrum, is old and in common use. In my invention the fulcrum consists of a headed bolt 0 of large diameter, having its head inside the building, while its outer end, which protrudes through the shutter to the outside, is formed with a hole a through it that receives the locking-bar of a padlock D, a washer (1 being arranged on the end of the fulcrum-bolt between the padlock and the shutter to prevent the shutters from scarring the locking-bar of look.
For ordinary use in unlocking and opening or closing and locking the shutters, the bar A is simply manipulated about its fulcrum from the inside, but. when the emergency of fire arises the fire department official or police officer having charge of the padlock key opens the padlock and forces the fulcrum bolt in and thus opens the shutters without the necessity of delay on the one hand or breaking in through the door or window on the other.
. Where only single shutters are used, as in Figs. 3 and 4, a long hasp-bar A'is secured to the framing of the window on the outside by a staple e, and the other end of the haspbar is formed with a hole that passes over the bolt C of large diameter, which bolt has ahole through it on the outside to receive the locking-bar of the padlock D and has also a shoulder 0 and on the inside has another hole through it to receive a split key or spring cotter E. This bolt 0 passes through the stationary casing or frame of the window until its end protrudes inside the building, so that when the key or cotter E is passed through its slotted end on the inside it efiectually prevents this belt from coming out, and the latter with the padlock holds the hasp-bar firmly across the outside of the shutter, so that it cannot be opened. In the ordinary manip ulation of this form of the device from theinside the shutter is opened or closed by simply removing the key or cotter E and pushing the shutter open, the bar with the padlock remaining connected and hanging down upon the outside, but when the fastener is to be opened from the outside by the fire department the padlock isopened by the key in the possession of its officers, and the bar and bolt are thereby disconnected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. A fastener for shutters, the, consisting of an adjustable cross bar for fastening said shutter, a bolt pivotally connected to said cross bar and having a perforated outer end, and a padlock arranged outside of the building and having its locking bar normally retained in the hole in the end of the bolt,whereby the shutter may be easily opened by the occupant from the inside in the usual manip- IOC ulation thereof, orbe opened from the outside in the contingency of fire by the holder of the key substantially as shown and described.
2. A fastening for shutters, &c., consisting of a bar fulcrumed about its center and provided with bar staples adapted to receive its ends, afulerum bolt passing through said bar and having outside the shutter an opening through the same, and a pad-lock having its locking bar secured in the hole of the fulcrum to bolt substantially as and for the purpose described.
