Description

i. H. RUNYAN. Hasn-Locks'. No. 147,694, Patented Feb.17.`1s74..
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE J. HARRISON RUNYAN, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
IMPOVEMNT IN HASP-LOKS.
Specicltion forming part of Letters Patent No. d, dated February 1?,18749 application filed November 26, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatl, J. HARnIsoN RUNYAN, ot' Flint, in the county of Genesee and Sta-te of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Door and Gate Fastenings, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention has for its object to provide a self-acting fastener for single and double doors and gates, which will, when the door or gate is shut, lock it fast and it consists in a novel and peculiar hasp and lever, the former hinged and the latter pivoted to a base-plate secured to one of the doors, or, if single, to the post, the whole being 'arranged to operate as more fully herenaterset forth.
Figure lis a perspective view of my fastener as applied to double doors, one of` which is shown opened. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional {plan taken on the line x x in Fig. 2.
In the drawing, A represents a base-plate, which may be secured to the outside of that one of the two double gates or doors which is ordinarily kept closed, if, to fasten single doors or gates, it is secured to the outer face of the frame or post, near the inner edge. To the inner end of the part A is hinged a hasp, B, having a mortise to embrace a staple, a, on the swinging gate or door, which may then be locked with a padlock by passing its bow through the end of the staple. bis an arm projecting from the inner face of the hasp, which, being struck by the edge of the swin gin g door when closing, swings the hasp around against its outer face. The edges of both doors are recessed to receive this arm. C is a lever, pivoted at c to the base-plate, its inner end swing ing up against an angular abutment or shoulder, d, on the back of the hasp, when the latter is closed against the door, the lever being then in a horizontal plane. rlhe outer end ot' the lever is weighted, so as to causeit to as sume the horizontal position when free to do so, a stop, e, being placed 011 the base-plate to arrest it at the proper point.
To enable a person to open the gate or door from the inside, a cord, f, is led from the 1ingerpiece, at the outer end of the lever, up through a hole in the door, by pulling ou which cord that end ofthe lever will be lifted, moving the other end below and away from the hasp, which is then free to swing outwardly and allow the door or gate to be opened.
With the exception of the arm Z1, the working parts may be made of wood, although itis preferable to make the whole of metal.
What I claim as my invention, :and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hasp B, hinged tothe base-plate A, and provided with the arm b, and the lever C pivoted to said plate, the whole being arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
