W. TIFFANY.
(ModeL) HASP LOCK.-v
Patented Mar. 12, 1889.
Sum M900 llmrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM TIFFANY, OF CRESW'ELIJ, OREGON.
HASP-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,451, dated March 12, 1889. Application filed April 20, 1887. Serial No. 235,534 (Model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TIFFANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Creswell, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ilasp-Loeks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved hasplock, the ob jeet of which is to provide ahasp and padlock combined, in which the eonstruction simple, strong, and durable, and which will be more easily mani 'iulated than similar articles of the kind heretofore made.
My invention consists, further, in certain details of construction and arrangement h ereinatter fully described, specifically pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hasp-lock applied to a door, Fig. Bis a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the body of a padlock, the .rear plate of which is extended beyond the lower end of the lock to form the fiat hasp 1;, having the longitudinal slot C, near the rear end, adapted to operate on a pin orstud, I), on the door or other structure.
E is the shackle of the padlock pivoted at e, and adapted to engage in a staple, 4, in the jamb or casing of the door. The said hasp is thus held in a horizontal position when the shackle engaged in the staple, and when it is not desired to lock the same it will be readily understood that the hasp, having the shackle on the outer end, as described, will serve as an ordinary hook.
The formation of the hasp with a slot in the rear end. enables the same to be more easily engaged in the staple, owing to the longitudi- Inal movement thus attorded.
In place of the stud D to secure and pivot the rear end of the hasp to the door, I may use a staple, passing one leg thereof through the slot 0, the object in any case being to allow considerable longitudinal play to the hasp, and permit it when released to swing down vertically from the said stud or staple.
By forming the hasp as an extension of the rear plate of the padlock the simplicity of the device and the cheapness of manufacture thereof is greatly increased, and also the side of the lock being held upwardly when the hasp is locked in place, and the lower side or edge thereof being held upwardly when the hasp is swinging loosely from the staple or stud, rain is prevented from entering and rusting the interior mechanism of the said look.
I am aware that it is old to combine a pad lock with a hasp, and this, broadly, I disclaim. My improvement resides in having the hasp form the back of the look, as particularly set forth in the claim.
Having now fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a padlock having a pivoted shackle, of the sheet-metal plate 13, having a longitudinal slot, at one end adapted to engage over a stud or similar device on the door, and secured at its other end to the body ot the lock and forming a back for the same, the said lock being so arranged that its shackle projects beyond the end of the plate, substantially as specified.
Intestimony that I claim. the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto atlixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM TIFFANY.
